The two formats talked about most are 12 teams (6+6) or 16 teams (8+8), meaning the champions from the Top 6 or Top 8 conferences might get an AQ.
The power conferences are not buying into all conferences getting an AQ, and use NCAA rules as justification to limit the AQs, so there are more at large to go to the power conferences.

What that means is it matters a LOT which conference you are in. The bottom 2 or 4 might get left out most of the time. If that happens, those conferences fall further behind in money and prestige, and the others separate even more. Comparing to FCS, would you want to be in a non-AQ conference like the MEAC?

Personally not interested in CUSA at this point, but if that thinking is shared by the actual conferences that's great news for us. We need to be known to be the next piece taken off the table when a G5 comes looking. The more our name comes up in front of other conferences, the more the MW may feel the need to pick us and Montana up before someone else does. The leverage would swing from "NDSU will always be there should we need them" to "we better pick these guys up before the MAC does".

We are a Day 1 plug and play option for a quality G5 conference. Our geography may be difficult to swallow for some in those conferences, but in all other regards we'd enter into the MAC or MW as a middle of the road athletic department.

Sure, it's a popular analogy, maybe that makes us look better. I was more so thinking that it reveals the scarcity of what we have to offer to the G5. Once one of them snaps us up, we're gone. Then you're stuck looking at Montana, Idaho, UNI, UTEP, etc.

Likely football only. They still need the NCAA for other sports like Basketball.

If there's a split, not convinced they will take all the conferences with them.
MWC and AAC probably go, the others maybe not. They will up the requirements to qualify.
