One of the things all the pundits are missing is Carson's intelligence.

Listened to Mike and Mike this AM and they replayed a recent discussion among other ESPN talking heads about the problems QBs like Kaepernick, the III, and others that are having struggles in the NFL. While one guy maintained they are in the wrong system a couple, including Golic, made the point that the main problem is the lack of their football intelligence and ability to absorb the intricacies of making adjustments based on what they are seeing.

I think intelligence is the not so apparent attribute that will make Carson shine in the combine and in the NFL. It is a primary reason Belichek spent a second round pick on Grappolo.

Those are great points. I remember having a conversation about Kaepernick during his second season. He wasn't adjusting. Everyone. And I do mean EVERYONE, gets figured out in the NFL. It isn't about if you get stopped, it is about when. The solid players can tweak their game a little bit here and there to keep opponents off balance a little bit. The great ones learn how to constantly put their opponents on their heels because they adjust before they are completely figured out. Only a handful of NFL athletes have ever played that are so exceptional it doesn't matter if they are figured out, the best you can hope for is to slow them down. Those are the once in a generation type players. Everyone else has to adjust to being figured out. Kaepernick and III have been figured out. One could even go so far as to say the Redskins completely changed their system to fit around III and never had confidence he would spend the time mastering it. Their system is going to lead to a fair amount of sacks, just not boneheaded decisions and tons of fumbles. SF went with a RO heavy offense to capitalize on CK, but he has gotten to the point where he bails out on it so he can't sell it to anyone. If that is your game and you can't adjust, you better be willing to suck it up and take the punishment of being that kind of player.

I think Wentz has the physical skills to give a team a lot of different options. He has the intellect to give a team the opportunity to grow around him and adjust with him. I have said it before, physically he reminds me a lot of Tannehill. He can keep a defense off balance with the ability to take off for a first down but has the arm strength to be a pocket QB. Tannehill gets a bad rap for his deep throws but it isn't his arm strength that is a problem. It is developing the timing of getting set to throw the ball deep at the NFL level. That takes some time. The game is fast and being able to throw the ball 70 yards and being able to throw the ball 70 yards with a DE breathing down your neck is two different things.

In the end, I do think if Carson is the right system where he can develop behind an outgoing QB for a couple of seasons, he will have a hell of chance towards a fruitful NFL career. There are some intriguing teams who will probably be in the top half of the second round who will start getting antsy for their future QB if a guy like Wentz is still there like the Cowboys, Saints, Chiefs, and Bears. The Cardinals and Broncos will end up picking later in the 2nd, but you have to think they will be looking. I just don't see as high as a first round unless he blows everyone away in the senior bowl and combine and someone wants the option year added for first rounders. I can't think anyone has him projected as an immediate starter and hope for his career's sake that holds true. He has way too much potential to end up getting chewed up in someplace like D.C. right away because every other option sucks so bad for them right now.
