The residential population of downtown Minneapolis has tripled in the last 5 years or something crazy like that. Which is a great thing. More people equals safer. Hopefully it keeps growing because the double edge of the skyway system is that it divides foot traffic so you need more people to support a dynamic and thriving business, retail, and cultural scene.
Minneapolis is short 200 police, and no one want to join the force there. Downtown turns into gangland after dark. Police can't do anything, the one's they arrest get released the next day. They had a memo to the public a while back, just give the crooks what they want, your money, your car, and nobody gets hurt. The light rail isn't that safe either. The news media reports very little of the crime that actually happens in Minneapolis, the new Detroilet. Should be okay in groups during the day, around the stadium, just be aware of your surroundings.

You're probably right, but if I was given the choice between living in Fargo's worst neighborhood vs NYC's worst neighborhood....I'd choose Fargo's worst every time.

I've been in the metro since 1990, worked downtown, and never felt unsafe there until the last 3 years.

That’s probably correct. Most of the crimes not only occur in bad neighborhoods those neighborhoods have bad blocks where crime is concentrated and most of the rest of the neighborhood is relatively safe.

Yes, they’re short a bunch of police. That’s what happens after they fuck up so badly the department gets investigated by the justice department. Crime and violent crime is decreasing despite this. They are not releasing violent offenders the next day they are prosecuting violent crimes. That memo seems like solid advice to everyone everywhere all the time.

If the news media doesn’t report it how do you know it’s happening? Are you down there counting yourself? Are you stalking the halls of the County Court House? How do you know?

“Be aware of layout surroundings” more good advice that is applicable to everyone everywhere all the time.

I put a link in post #444 in this thread regarding this. It does not rely on media reports but rather others known as “victims”. Does it support your feelings? It’s just hard data.

That article focused on Homicide/Death, which could still leave out other violent crimes like armed robbery, carjackings, etc.
The safest places listed were all suburbs, which are not in the heart of any city.

Maybe it is safer in the manhattan times square tourist area where they focus a lot of resources.

In the NYC Financial district as of 2020:
    Population: 31,087
    Violent crime (per 100k): 706
Total Reported Crime (per 100k): 4,944
Chance of Being a Victim: 1 in 21

    Fargo:
Crime Rate (per 1,000 residents) 5.20
    Per 100k would be 520 vs 4944

So Fargo is about 10 times safer than the NYC financial district, which should be better than other parts of NYC.

So now a chunk of Manhattan island with a residential population the size of Minot is representative of something? I guess I’m forced to conclude that Fargo is a large city and large cities are safer.

Did you even scan down to the MSA data?

Death v total crime. I guess it comes down to what you’re really afraid of. if you want you can check out Forbes where they boil all crime down to a cost in dollars because I know that’s the first thing I think of when I’m scared.
