Yeah, half the teams on that list had just started up FB programs. The supposed adequate sample size was an illusion. In reality, it was actually three groups in which each group had too few members to make accurate predictions. The first group consists of long-time football schools with a history of sustained success. That group is actually just App St and Georgia Southern which haven't played a down of FBS football yet. The second group consists of long-time football schools without a history of sustained success. Why is it surprising that these schools might struggle? The last group consists of schools new to football. Of course many of them will struggle - they have no history to build on.

    History of sustained success:
    Appalachian State
    Georgia Southern

    Erratic history:
    Western Kentucky
    Massachusetts
    Texas State

    No history:
    Florida Atlantic
    Florida International
    UTSA
    South Alabama
    Old Dominion
    Georgia State

So why would you think the information from that article has major bearing on NDSU when none of it comes from the group NDSU would be a part of. We are much closer to schools like Boise State or Marshall than the new-to-football group. (the length of time since Boise and Marshall moved up make accurate comparisons to that group problematic as well)

I'm not saying NDSU should immediately move up. Far from it. But this article is nearly worthless to use in an argument against moving up.

Good point on the other teams being start ups. They are the equivalent to an NFL expansion team. As we all know expansion teams take forever to build a team. The texans took 8 years to get a winning record. The Browns have been even more mediocre but the Ravens with the same team did alright. You got the Jags and Panthers who did ok early on but have all time losing records. It took the Bucs 20 years and the Seahawks a decade

It just occurred to me that Chapo must have been banned and carted back across the Rio

NDSU's decisions should never be based on other programs success or failure. Period.

Agreed. The schools mentioned are no reason for comparison based caution. NDSU is a different critter. Fiscally responsible, yes, but we simply aren't going to be losers if we move up. We will be very good

I wouldn't even compare NDSU to GSU or APP. I think both of those schools will struggle in FBS as well. They are gonna get swallowed up by all of the BCS programs in their area. The one thing NDSU has in it's favor and it's detriment is location. Our location is great for recruiting upper level FCS and mid-range FBS talent, however it is prohibitive as far as getting an FBS conference invite and travel. What would really help NDSU is a complete realignment of D1 football but I don't see that ever happening. The next best scenario would be the to get into a G5 and hopefully work it's way to the top similar to Boise State.

First and foremost, I apologize for the FBS thread, number infinity on this forum to count now. But maybe this will slow down some of the overly enthused and bring us back to earth a bit.

Rather lengthy article, but I think is an amazing read. This is about the last 10 years of FCS schools transferring to the FBS level.. Tons of great facts and examples in this... 1 pill i had to swallow is the fact that FBS schools are overall better than FCS schools. Yes that's including Iowa St. As much as I really hate to admit they are better than us. Don't get me wrong they are arrogant ass mother*******. and have a rather inferior football program to speak of in the grand scheme of things, they are FBS, and from the looks of it, its pretty damn hard to play in the FBS. None of these schools mentioned in the article are in the big 5 conferences.

In all, this school is having major success right now.. Nothing would make me happier than to move to the highest level to compete... Maybe we will get that chance one day, time will tell.. I just think as a fan base we need to pump the brakes just a little bit. But of course, still enjoy in the success we have now and let's see where the chips fall. I think the best thing for NDSU to do is to wait 4-5 years to see how Georgia Southern and App State do. All of those colleges in the article above, didn't really have the greatest success in the FCS for the most point.. Let's see how two of the best fare right now in the FBS for a bit, then NDSU decide on what the next move is..

    That is all.
I have to say that basing our decision off the success of others worries me a bit. How has that worked out for un_? Way too many factors aren't the same for each school. You can't throw a rock and not hit a big boy school in that area.

I am in the "move if it's right for us" camp.

I think NDSU should begin thinking about the FBS move but realistically, it is still a long way off. We can talk about all the success we have had but that doesn't mean shit for a FBS move. The first thing we need to have happen is we need a bigger commitment from the state of ND before we even think about the FBS. We are a smaller school, relatively isolated from all other FBS schools. The only way we compete at a high level FBS is if we get a commitment from the state that helps the university grow and helps provide the resources to both the school's academic side and the athletic side. If we don't have that, we will find it very hard to compete at the next level. Get the state to start helping out on things instead of us having to do 100% of every damn project by ourselves, or else we're going to be nothing but a glorified version of Idaho.
    Don't matter. FIVE-PEAT!
