Back when I was in school, I always assumed it was green and gold and that those colors were chosen because they are agricultural colors. Crops are green when growing and golden when harvested.

Correct with the intention, not with the name of the color. Green and yellow were chosen for exactly the reasons you state. (read the lyrics to The Yellow and the Green*) But it was yellow in the beginning. I believe the athletic switch to using the term gold came during/after the championships of the 60's. Alliteration and inference began to rule the day after that. (Green and Gold; green and (championship) gold)

Yes that is annoying. However, Iowa State won the last time they played in Iowa City.
