The athletic facility thing is a delicate dance, but NDSU somehow needs to start making their case more directly to the public and get the public to take action. If the need is pressing enough, heck in ND you could even try an initiated measure. (Say to bond the SHAC if we still needed it.) You just can't let these guys have a free pass. Maybe even work with PACs with big donors to fund challengers that would be more "friendly" to NDSU.

I have no idea if any of this stuff would work; just throwing out ideas.

Need to have someone in legislature sponsor a bill to allow bonding for certain higher education projects. Could structure it similar to other states. I believe SD just started to allow bonding about 5 or 6 years ago. NDSU now falling behind to others in conference. Ridiculous to build a facility with no allowance for growth, like the SHAC. Stuck with that building for 30 years. Not expandable whatsoever. How shortsighted.

They've already found a way around it by having the NDSU Foundation guarantee the necessary funds and then having them issue bonds if necessary. It's how big portion of the Fargodome office space/locker room renovations were paid for in 2005 (still almost $1.5 million remain outstanding) and how the SHAC was able to move forward.

Call bull on that. There is nothing saying MBB is going to be stuck in the SHAC for 30 years. NDSU needs three arenas of three different sizes. Right now, that's the FD, the SHAC, and the BBF. Nothing says that that is the way it's going to stay. In fact, we already know the BBF is inadequate if VB is cooking. Ten or fifteen years from now, we could see a new MBB arena with the SHAC taking over for the BBF. Personally, I'm still hoping for a basketball addition to the FD like the 2008 proposal that almost happened.

    FD: FB
new facility: MBB, maybe WBB, large wrestling events
SHAC: maybe WBB, regular wrestling, VB
    BBF: goes back to intermural/phy-ed/ROTC

If I were converting the SHAC for VB/WR down the road, I would tear out the old upper deck and just leave the walkway with a press box. That would drop the capacity down to a level perfect for VB and WR while leaving all the new amenities. The area reclaimed by pulling out the upper deck would be well-used by any number of athletic dept. functions.

Think of the SHAC as a stepping stone, rather than an end game. If nothing else, it will help your blood pressure.

Yeah, and the legislature wasn't happy with that process. They've come very close to closing that loophole. Almost certain they will close it if someone tries to ram a big project through it.

Mostly a couple members of the legislature weren't happy with it. Namely Stryle, Carlson and Skarpol. They don't speak for the whole legislature they just think they do and yell louder than anyone else.

Point. But they are in leadership positions and control some important committees. They can do a lot of damage when they go on one of their rampages. Remember that just about everyone thought the Sioux nickname bill was a joke until Carlson decided to use his position to ram it through.

    Nicely done.

Totally agree on othe uses for it. Although not sure why everyone talking about being "stuck in the shac" like it's a bad thing. This is now an awesome facility. We just need to maintain it and upgrade it. They basically let the BSA fall apart. Heck look how nice thr Fargodome looks after nearly 25 years.

And as far as size goes, if we were to sell out the place, we would be ranked in the top 100 for attendance. Check out the NCAA attendance. Seems right about perfect
