FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State has six assistant football coaches in place on new head coach Chris Klieman's staff, which takes over this week following the program's third straight NCAA Division I national championship.
Tim Polasek returns to NDSU as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach after one season at Northern Illinois, former Northern Iowa defensive coordinator and Western Illinois associate head coach Matt Entz will be NDSU's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, former St. Cloud State head coach Randy Hedberg will be the quarterbacks coach after six seasons in that role at Southern Illinois, and Jamar Cain will be the defensive ends coach after one year as the defensive line coach and defensive coordinator at Wyoming.
Current NDSU assistant coaches Nick Goeser and Conor Riley will stay on staff. Goeser is the defensive tackles coach and has taken over as the program's recruiting coordinator, and Riley will move to offensive line coach after spending one season as the tight ends and running backs coach.
Polasek was the tight ends and fullbacks coach for a 12-2 Northern Illinois team that advanced to the Mid-American Conference championship game and Poinsettia Bowl. He spent seven seasons at NDSU being promoted from graduate assistant in 2006 to running backs coach in 2007 and also served as the special teams coordinator and was the fullbacks and tight ends coach in 2012.
Entz arrived at Northern Iowa in 2010 as the defensive line coach in Klieman's final year as the defensive coordinator at UNI. Entz was the defensive line coach in 2011 and took on coordinator duties in 2012 before joining Western Illinois as associate head coach and defensive line coach in 2013. He was an assistant coach at Winona State from 2002-09 and Wayne (Neb.) State from 1996-01.
Hedberg coached the quarterbacks for the most prolific passing offense in the Missouri Valley Football Conference this year at Southern Illinois. He was the head coach at St. Cloud State for nine seasons (1999-07) and at Minot State for eight seasons (1982-89) compiling a 92-74-2 mark overall. Hedberg was the offensive coordinator at Central Missouri (1990-95) and North Dakota (1996-98) in between head coaching jobs.
Cain was promoted from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator at Wyoming in November after spending the previous four seasons (2009-12) as the defensive line coach at Cal Poly. He spent three seasons in the Missouri Valley Football Conference as the defensive ends coach at Missouri State from 2006-08. Cain was a defensive graduate assistant on Frank Solich's staff at Ohio in 2005.
Klieman was named the 30th head coach in NDSU history on Dec. 15. He succeeds Craig Bohl, who went 104-32 over 11 seasons from 2003-13 and was hired by Wyoming on Dec. 8.
