I don't even see that very often when coaching 7th and 8th graders. I've even had a few that probably wouldn't hesitate against guys like that who are much, much bigger. That's the thing, though. Scam Newton is a very big dude, bigger than anyone else in that frame other than his own offensive linemen. He should be delivering punishment in a situation like that, not shirking away from it.

I could almost understand jumping back if it was clear a teammate was going to make a clean recovery(last thing you want is two members of the same team fighting over the ball and accidentally knocking it into the hands of an opposing player), but it was clear a Bronco was going to be the first to get a hand on it. No excuse for not diving in and fighting for the ball in that case.
