NDSU TO FBS. HAVEN'T WE WON ENOUGH?
Speaking of mandates from the students as it were, Tony, years ago (late 1960s or early 1970s, I believe), the UND student body did indeed mandate the construction of the original Ralph Engelstad arena (recently demolished) on the UND campus to replace the venerable Winter Sports Building from the 1930s. UND students at the time knowlingly voted to raise their student activity fees by their decision. Of course, one could reasonably argue that that was a different era. I do think to a great extent it could well turn out to be an FBS in football versus a hockey crowd decision, and I have no idea on what would likely win out, if either. Certainly, UND's decision to add women's hockey to help comply with Title IX requirements strongly influenced its decision on holding off on a possible move to Division I about a dozen years ago. Yes, there were other factors involved in that decision, but there is no question hockey is expensive, whether a women's sport or a men's sport. And to a certain extent if one spends more on one sport it can cut into the development of other, equally desirable sports in the overall sports program, no question about it. In the end, one has to pick and choose. And, sometimes one wins and sometimes one loses, although that isn't always a given commodity when one is making those decisions. Hindsight is 20/20.

We all live in stories... It seems to me that a definition of any living vibrant society is that you constantly question those stories... The argument itself is freedom. It's not that you come to a conclusion about it. Through that argument you change your mind sometimes... That's how societies grow. When you can't retell for yourself the stories of your life then you live in a prison... Somebody else controls the story. - S. Rushdie
