We're obviously picking a few guys who have big talent and need the experience for when our seniors depart. It's part of the reloading process.

DeLuca didn't redshirt. Before him, DeShawn Dinwiddie didn't redshirt. Before him, Grant Olson didn't redshirt. Before him, Preston Evans didn't redshirt. We always seem to pull redshirts from freshmen LBs as they are some of the most valuable additions to special teams. It seems to be a cycle.

Hah! I had to run to gobison.com to see how that was too. That was an outstanding play.

You missed Don Carter in between Dinwiddie and Olson. Last year (2012) was the only season in the most recent six that a true freshman linebacker has NOT played.

You hit the nail on the head. BUT it also gives them game reps this year to get them used to the speed of the game in case they are need in the rotation due to injury etc.

does a redshirt really get pulled if they never were going to redshirt?

You can dress, but once you hit the field the redshirt is gone. If you pull a redshirt for just special teams, not a good pull. If you plan on getting them other game reps, then sure, maybe. I would rather have the production from the individual on what would be their fifth year than 10 plays a game on special teams their true freshman year. Not even close.
