That's not at all what I heard from the ones that I knew on the team. From what I heard, the ones that actually played on the court for him liked him, while the ones that didn't play, didn't. Doesn't really matter at this point. IMHO he coached the program at a high level D1, and some of the girls could not handle it. Proof of his coaching commitment and intensity were reflected in his results. The one's that wanted to play, were committed, and understood the D1 sacrifices liked him because they knew he made them outstanding players and an outstanding team. His philosophy wasn't for everyone, but it certainly worked for the ones that wanted to work hard and win. NDSU turned into a very well respected mid major under him.

Now were average in our own conference. Hopefully it gets better.

Well she is a stater, but her B-friend is a second hand source so who really knows. The B-friend mentioned that coach made it the game feel like a job. In any sense, I agree, proof is in the play....I was sorry to see Coach B. go.

I received great advice from my dad once upon a time when I was bitching about my coach. He said that a head coach should not be your friend. If any coaches should be your friend, it is the assistants. The head coach is paid to make decisions to help the team. If Hinterstocker lost the team, is sure wasn't obvious on the court. His teams won.

My coaches made sports not fun plenty of times. Even if a sport isn't fun in practice or even in games, when the game is over and you win, it is fun. Who cares if the girls are having fun? Their job is to win matches and provide entertainment in exchange for schollie money.

I agree sort of----Coach Friend. Should the Coach be your friend---Yes, when you need a friend. Should the coach be a beast---Yes, when you need the coach to be a beast. What I hated and still hate are the coaches who thinks yelling and insults are the end all be all of motivating all players. Some will respond to it, some will not. As a coach you want the best talent on the field---not just those who respond to your yelling.

(BTW I am not saying this is what Coach B did or was like, as I would not know).

I agree with this. Even Coach Bohl talks about how everyday for those guys is a work day. Bring your hard hat and lunch box, it's time to work. Away games are all business. They go there, do their job, come straight home. You want to have fun at this level, succeed. Work hard and you will reap the benefits. This isn't high school any more where you do things because your friends are and it's fun. This is a business. A money making business. With that said, I didn't respond well to yelling either, but maybe I just didn't care enough...

I am so sick of the Bison already. Win this, win that, blah, blah, blah. I'd really, really like to know how they do it. I swear they have to be the luckiest sob's on the planet. Just sick of this bs, just fed up.

I would not know either, but what it SEEMS like to me is that he was a bit of a hardass who MAY have went a little too far. But if Bohl did it those things, I can't imagine anything happening.

You are 100% on the money. A great coach knows when to yell, when to cajole, when to encourage etc and which player will respond to each tactic the best. He knows when to pressure and knows when to back off. He doesnt need to be your friend but he is the person you know you can turn to in a time of need.
