The internal debates in the Legislature on this should be interesting. It certainly seems like the Legislators who want a strong control over spending have their man with the hire of Shirvani. What they wanted all along is a system they can control. The have their thumb on the SBoHE and they got the SBoHE to hire a leader who would be strong in keeping the Universities in line. If they let the Presidents and the students mutiny, it will set them back a long way. Rolling over is probably not an option.

The problem is that the SBOHE is merely the rope in the tug of war. The legislature should have no control over anything.

Add me to the curious list. I'm getting a sense that this is a battle of the knives. Trying to bleed an opponent out by a hundred little nicks. They have nothing tangible to use, so it's all this nebulous garbage. It's his "management style". He "doesn't listen to us enough". He's "too overbearing". He "hurts our feelings". I'm sorry, I guess no one has actually used that last one out loud(though that seems to be the gist of the whole list). Give me something solid and I'll join the torch and pitchfork crowd, but I'll continue to be scornful of his opponents until some real proof surfaces.

The thing I don't understand is the legislature doesn't want to give him the extra personnel as there hasn't been enough control. Yet these personnel would be for independent auditors and such from the SBOHE and not just each colleges own. The legislature wanted more controlled universitiies then when the SBOHE had a plan to implement that they scoff at the idea. Yet if they were to take over higher ed they would have to implement the same positions if they wanted to get the information needed to make the tough decisions. There are so many ifs and buts and unknowns it is hard to form a opinion on who is in the correct position for the betterment of higher ed.

It feels like there was a quiet faction of the legislature who were fairly happy with the status quo and another vocal faction(Carlson/Skarpol/etc) who were pissed off. Shirvani comes in with changes that have appeased the old vocal faction, but now the status quo faction is riled up and making noise. Classic catch-22.

Raise you hand if you really think that the legislature is interested in making decisions about higher education based on information.

We all live in stories... It seems to me that a definition of any living vibrant society is that you constantly question those stories... The argument itself is freedom. It's not that you come to a conclusion about it. Through that argument you change your mind sometimes... That's how societies grow. When you can't retell for yourself the stories of your life then you live in a prison... Somebody else controls the story. - S. Rushdie

Bob Skarphol is a fool. Students have every right to take a vote of "no confidence" in Shirvani. They are, afterall, the reason the entire University system exists.

and are also more likely to know who this person is, as opposed to Hamid Shirvani.
