NDSU raised tuition because the legislature completely changed the equity funding formula at the last minute.

There is a second article that points the finger at NDSU for increasing tuition after the legislature was told it was going to be much less.
It was 8.8% if you remember but Skogen corrected it says it by reminding them there was no increase second year, average 4.4%.
Less than that, actually 4.3%, because compounding.

Just like that 61% increase over 10 years line in the story is meant to sound big and lead you to conclude that tuition is going up 6.1% a year. It really comes out to less than 4.9% a year. Not peanuts, but 20% less than the wrong number that they're trying to scare everyone into compliance with.

We all live in stories... It seems to me that a definition of any living vibrant society is that you constantly question those stories... The argument itself is freedom. It's not that you come to a conclusion about it. Through that argument you change your mind sometimes... That's how societies grow. When you can't retell for yourself the stories of your life then you live in a prison... Somebody else controls the story. - S. Rushdie

Rep. Ben Koppelman, a committee member and Republican from West Fargo, said the bill is not so much a legislative attempt to hold power as it is a way to control the overall cost of higher education, ... ”

It would be interesting to see exactly what the Legislature cuts from/adds to the Governor's budget (as well as what the Governor cuts/adds from the SBoHE recommendations.) I'm guessing that there is a huge gain on some campuses offset partially by large cuts to NDSU every single time.

I thought there was one bill for spending and one bill for capital projects, but I have a feeling that they might sneak money to, say, Williston State and UND, on other bills too.

    they'll definitely try.

the legislature is as culpable in this mess as anyone else.

I agree they should be subject to the law as well.

Gov. Dalrymple’s budget did not include funding for the three big capital projects Dunbar Hall and additions to Sudro Hall to keep pharmacy and nursing school accreditation and the engineering complex. Anyone hear if any state senator or rep is proposing actually helping NDSU?

In a normal year, all the Legislators with NDSU students going to NDSU (which is all of them) would stand around and say, "Hey, they're gutting NDSU's budget again. Where are we going for lunch?"

Maybe this is Jack trying to let some guys be white knights. It certainly presents an opportunity from somebody to demonstrate some leadership.
