    Default High Schools Discussion

Someone on here said they worked closely with the WF school district, could someone find out something for me?? How many people (population) live within the WF school district boundaries?? I know that Horace and Harwood/Reile's Acres are both in WF's district, but I was curious to see if WF's district may be too big now for just one high school, how close they are to building a 2nd HS like they were pondering not too long ago.

A second high school is part of the referendum that was passed last summer. It is called Sheyenne, and will open in Fall 2013 according to the referendum fact sheet: http://www.west-fargo.k12.nd.us/2011...lFactSheet.pdf

    Wow, didn't know that, thanks.

So now, if I assume that Shanley is Class AAA again, the HS football teams in the metro that can play against each other pretty soon:

    North
    South
    Davies
    Shanley
    West Fargo
    Sheyenne

(Assuming I'm correct in hearing that Shanley went back to AAA, and assuming they stay there for a while)

Here's all the high schools in the F-M urban area as of next year:

    North
    South
    Moorhead
    Davies
    West Fargo
    Sheyenne
    Shanley
    Oak Grove/Park Christian
    Dilworth/Glyndon

Yep, there's quite a few teams. To add one more, Park Christian started their own football program last fall and is playing MN 9-man, so Oak Grove is its own program again. I believe they dropped from AA to A.

2012 is the second year of the current plan. No changes are allowed. I believe Shanley is AA and Oak Grove is A.

The 2013-14 plan is out on the NDHSAA website. Shanley is listed as AA and Oak Grove is the smallest A enrollment. I don't think you can move down but you can request to move up a division. Shanley could request a move to AAA. Deadline for those requests is Sept 30, 2012. Once the 2 year plan is set, there are no changes allowed.

Just in case anyone is interested in the mechanics of the transition. The academic wing of the new high school is currently under construction. About half of the steel work is finished. The work will continue through the school year and next summer and open in the fall of 2013. Next summer, construction of the fine arts addition and commons expansion will begin, to be finished in the fall of 2014.

The split of the students will be handled differently than the South/Davies split. Currently, Sheyenne houses all the 9th graders and WFHS houses all the 10th-12th graders. That will continue for 2012-13 school year. For the 2013-14 school year, Sheyenne will keep all the 10th graders along with the 9th. WFHS will then be only grades 11 & 12. The schools will finish the split for the 2014-15 school year when both will be 9-12. WFHS will keep around 60-65% of the students(everyone north of I-94), while Sheyenne will take the remainder(everyone south of I-94).

WFPS believes that the southern neighborhoods will grow much faster than the northern(safe bet), and they don't want to keep shifting the boundary every few years. They are choosing to keep Sheyenne well under capacity for a few years and let it grow into itself. It's going to create some economic disparity problems, but there weren't any easy ways of solving it. The lion's share of the low-income kids will be going to WFHS, while the kids going to Sheyenne will be rather vanilla from a socioeconomic standpoint. That will work itself out over time as the southern neighborhood begin to age and diversify, but it's going to create a few challenges in the interim. Nothing that can't be solved, though.

Thread drift I know but I see how we got into school stuff and football.

Current move-ups are Dickinson Trinity to AA, Harvey/Fessenden to A, and Velva to A. (All those were eligible to play one class lower but chose to move).
For 2013-14, it looks like Bishop Ryan has already asked to move up to AA. Any others have until Sept 30 to request it.

I don't know where the Shanley talk came from. It could very well be true but sounds like suicide. They would be far and away the smallest AAA school (161 male enrollment). The next smallest (Devils Lake) is almost twice their size. The big schools dwarf them (WF 1,098 and Minot at 1,053).

Oak Grove is close to the 9-man level and I can see them competing well in A. Takes a very strong program for a small school like that to compete in AA.

I think Cavalier planned to request a move up to A in the 2011-12 plan but somebody messed up the filing and they ended up in 9-man for 2 years. I don't know what their enrollment is but I won't be surprised if they request a move back to A with the new plan. A similar example is Velva competing well in A with an enrollment in the 60's.

Question: Is it that there's always 16 teams playing AAA football in ND?? Does the NDHSAA always try to keep the number at 16 or can the number shrink or grow??

There will now be for sure 5 schools in Fargo/WF that will always be AAA. What does this do for the rest of the state?? Does the NDHSAA decide it can handle 18 AAA FB schools??

I also possibly see a Fargo City Conference at some point in the future if more schools are built as the city continues to explode. Already there will be 6 schools that will be in the same class for non-FB sports (5 for FB), maybe they'll always keep the downstream public schools (Central/RR) and establish a tight conference with very little travel costs.

Imagine a Friday night in Fargo-Moorhead-WF once Sheyenne establishes itself. You may have up to three games going on in the ND side of the river (for AAA alone) and another one on the MN side. Possibly 5-6 games going on in the F-M metro most nights. It's not like the TC where there's at least 30 games going on in the metro area on a Friday night, but just the travel burden will be reduced greatly for Fargo/WF atheletes.

Moorhead needs to be cautious about how they schedule ND schools. I know one year we got poor section seeding because we played North(one of the years they won state) and MSHSL wouldn't count it as a 5A win because of their size.
