I can't imagine not going to college...the educational part has been good to me, but the overall experience was something I'm glad I didn't miss.
I had so much fun getting drunk, chasing girls, going to football games and just goofing around during my college years. Plus, there were plenty of girls my age that did the same thing.
Yeah, those kids are making $90,000/year. But what do they do with it? I understand they can buy nice vehicles and electronics, but where do they live? Man camps with no women in sight. They aren't old enough to to go the bars or strip clubs, so it seems pretty boring to me.
The college experience is was priceless to me, but to each their own.
no worries. I was not offended. Just pointing out facts from my perspective. Like I said...you will never hear me complain about teaching in general. Sure there are a few parent issues from time to time...but overall...I'd rather do that then bust my butt all day on an oil rig in the heat. I remember I spent one summer roofing. Thats hard ass work. I remember sitting there on that roof thinking...this is why I am going to college...so I can find a job where I don't have to work that hard. (physically). I have a lot of respect for people who do those jobs and Im thankful its not me. They deserve every penny for the work they do. My job is easy compared to theirs. I just had my roof done yesterday. those guys worked in the 100 degree heat. That would suck. I don't care how much you would pay me...I wouldnt do it. again...thats why I went to college so I could have a cushier job.
I don't care how the vote ended up. They still suck and always will.
You have a great attitude. Thats why you're probably a great teacher. I have made a lot of cash but I can tell you it didn't really matter when i would wake up and dread going to work. Someone once told me you spend 1/3 of your life sleeping, 1/3 at work, and 1/3 with your wife so the 3 most important things are a bed, a career you love, and a wife you love. Hit on 2 and you're good. Hit on 3 and you're gold!

I preach to my kid all the time about going to college......get an education so you don't HAVE to stand on the highway holding a stop sign or running some construction equipment in 104 degree heat (actual temperature today). If he wants to, so be it but there are easier ways to make a living. I respect the hell out of those who do but there are easier ways to make a living and you can get benefits and make a career out of other professions.
I also agree 100% with aces about the college life......smuggling a keg into Reed Hall or University Village for Homecoming every year has to be worth at least 4 credits. You're only young once!

Not everybody should go to college. For most who get four year degrees, the lifetime earnings are well worth the cost. It is hard to tell kids to stay in school when their friends are earning what seems like a fortune. What they don't understand is what most of us older people know. The tough physical labor wears you out fast. For every year you work on a tough physical job, you take two or three off your life and they become damn precious later. A kid working a rig better earn 90 grand because he is paying a high price. He just doesn't know it.
That is exactly what I told my son. So he picked up his AAS, then joined the army and was selected for the Rangers. Basic in August (and beyond) at Benning and visits to some exotic desert areas. Sometimes they have to prove it to themselves. (Yes, he is done in December!)
