    Default Three records broken

Deborah John: 60m hurdles in 8.36 sec
Brittany Page, Antoinette Goodman, Brittany Schanandore and Paige Stratioti: 4x400m Relay (The crown jewel of team events) with a time of 3:41.12
Travis Fitzke: The Mile in 4:03.35, broke Mike Bollman's 1978 record of 4:04.30 (breaking a record that old by over a second is pretty incredible.)

Those three records are impressive. The girls track and field team at NDSU has been on a tear for about three years now ... just take a look at their top 10 lists ... many many 2009, 2010, and 2011 performances.

On Travis ... Fitzke ran a 3:46.64 over the past weekend at the Mt. Sac relays in southern California against some pretty good competition to carry him. I believe he got eighth place or so.

How does that compare to his mile time? Well ... it is generally OK to extrapolate a 1500 meter time from a mile time because the runner has to pass the 1500 meter mark on the way to running the mile. Some race organizers have timers at both the 1500 meter and the mile marks in case of personal bests or meet records, etc - for this reason.

But an extrapolation of a mile time from a 1500 meter time is not as accepted because the mile mark is 120 yards further than the 1500-meter mark. However, we amateurs do it all the time. So what does Fitzke's 3:46.64 translate to for the mile? 4:03.16.

He's run two 4:03's now ... so hopefully as his confidence grows, he'll be able to make a another leap forward before the season is over. The NDSU school record of 3:42.85 by Mike Bollman translates into about a 3:59.09 mile. I think Travis can achieve that before he is done at NDSU.
