I say that because there are some tremendous players from the 2007 recruiting class leaving this team, so I think it is a bit of a stretch to think the loss of 9 starters in addition to losing a very clutch punter and a kicker, who had a breakout season, will result in the kind of season we just experienced.
I personally don't think it will be very easy to replace the animal at RT. Cornick got to the next level over and over, moreso than any OT I have seen in a long while. Who is going to take the center position when the Bison face a huge, physical nosepeg that Lund can't handle?
You all have Crockett penciled in and Sigers coming back, but until either one or both of those become eligible again, I think the RB position is thin.
NDSU has had very few 1000 yd WR and Holloway will also be difficult to replace, if nothing else just on his experience alone. I am concerned that Vraa and Gebhardt lack the durability to play a significant role, even Smith has had injury issues. WR concerns me but I think NDSU will be okay at TE.
On the defensive side I do think there is enough DE talent that the loss of the great Colter Boyer will be tempered. We have a ton of OLB talent, but unless Jemison can get healthy I am not sure we will have the playmaking and game changing type of player game in and game out as we have seen in Willson. I think Olson can replace Evans without skipping a beat, we need depth there and it currently is lacking.
The FS position will undoubtedly be inexperienced and I think the loss of two seniors that played exceptionally this year will be very difficult for this defense. Eaves and Pike were a great team at that position.
Jastram was clutch this year, as was Voitlander, who arguably won the championship game on his own when he called the fake punt. Regardless, he turned the field over for the Bison over and over this year, a huge hidden statistic. We all have no idea whatsoever the talent, if any, that exist at those positions.
The bottom line, 12 returning starters is only slightly above 50% of a championship squad, even less if you count the specialists. I am not going to downplay the loss of that talent by thinking it is a simple matter of reloading. My 42 years of experience watching Bison football makes me a bit more conservative. Don't get me wrong, the Bison will be tough, but championship tough? We'll have to see.
