But that is also a completely separate discussion than where and how NDSU gets a very significant portion of its research funding.

Depending on the group and how they are looking at things, I would agree there are other very important metrics including those that you mentioned.

Well, for Carnegie, those are actually the only metrics that they use, but you do have a very good point: Both UND and NDSU are woefully non-competitive when it comes to federal grants and contracts, and it's hard to understand why. NDSU has been investing a fair amount into the VP for Research's staff, so it will be interesting to see if that pays off...

In NDSU's situation, without a doubt. UND puts too much money into the hockey program as well.. really don't think the AD understands the law of diminishing returns. Cut 500K from the hockey budget and it wouldn't make a shred of difference at the end of the year. Apply that money to basketball and it equates to a 25% budget increase, which would result in way more guaranteed home games, charter flights, assistant coaches that stay for more than a year, and wins. Also, lol at lakes if he thinks NDSU or anyone in the Summit or even the MVC is near being a peer to Sand Diego State. They have 4x the basketball budget and nearly 10x the basketball ticket sales... they spend 450K on guarantees wheras NDSU spends like 15K. Not bashing NDSU, because UND is in a worse spot. Lakes being Lakes... just too much

Yes. There are people who are saying that. Particularly some posters who actually support a different school than the one that brings most of us here. I wonder why that is…

Must have missed it. Please quote a single post where that's the case.

Didn't realize how lopsided it is.

Looks like over 30% of NSF funding to 4 states, and over 50% to 10 states. Everyone else getting the crumbs.

I think the idea is that the money isn't coming in for basketball so it's tough to allocate money to it. But yes, I'm with you

I would never support hockey if it means taking from othet sports. But if we could raise money and increase other sports budgets, I'm on board. Plus throw in an on campus arena within a few years
