    Holy cow and she ran in lane 2 for the most of the first lap. Outstanding job. Appears to me she can run even faster.

    Well, take the 800m, there's a target lap time they want to hit for the first lap and the pace setters are supposed to hit that target. In this case, I suppose they were aiming fora pace at this meet designed to get people to qualify for the USATF championships.

    Sometimes they also provide the important benefit of blocking the wind.

    In really long races, like marathons, they help the casual runner keep to a certain x minute mile pace.
