    Default Fun police....

    They are everywhere:

The gauntlet of food and merchandise vendors lining Melrose Avenue on Hawkeye football gamedays could be shut down if Iowa City follows through on a recommendation by a committee of municipal staff members.

The committee is proposing that the city begin enforcing its zoning regulations for the stretch of sidewalk and front yards that for years have served as a tent-and-table marketplace on fall Saturdays — a practice to which the city has traditionally turned a blind eye.

Agreed...hopefully they'll realize what a mistake that would be and either (a) continue to turn a blind eye, or (b) make it legal.

    An option from the story:

"Amend the zoining to allow on game days... which the committee says would be expensive and difficult to enforce."

I don't see how it would be either expensive or difficult to enforce. It's already a self regulated street fair and according to the story the city already as a current map of all the vendors and their "stalls".

Abscent the fundamentalist element who can never be appeased, it sould be cheap and easy to conform the zoing, implement some token licensing practice and an equally token fee for the vendors, file some paper work and everyone is happy.

We all live in stories... It seems to me that a definition of any living vibrant society is that you constantly question those stories... The argument itself is freedom. It's not that you come to a conclusion about it. Through that argument you change your mind sometimes... That's how societies grow. When you can't retell for yourself the stories of your life then you live in a prison... Somebody else controls the story. - S. Rushdie

Its sounds like a ploy from the local govt to get a cut of the action as the people who rent out there lawns to the food vendors get a pretty good price.

    And common sense prevails:

The city won't be punting the vendors hawking meat on a stick and "Beat State" T-shirts from their gameday home across from Kinnick Stadium after all.

The Iowa City Council at Monday's work session directed staff to move toward establishing a permit process for commercial operations along Melrose Avenue south of the stadium, where more than two dozen stands spring up on home game weekends.

Seems like the most reasonable outcome.

What I find amusing is they are calling for a permit process but there is already one in place with the health dept. What a bunch of maroons.

    Moment of confusion hits BV.

The Urban Dictionary defines Maroon as 'A term of derision often uttered by Bugs Bunny when referring to an interaction with a dopey adversary.'

Wikipedia defines maroon as a dark brownish to purplish red shade that was designated by Crayola crayons beginning in 1949.
