I can see similarities between Mertens/Mohler dynamic to the Flutie/Johnson controversy the Bills had in 98, except in reverse.

Flutie=Mohler, Rob Johnson=Mertens

Rob Johnson was supposed to be "the man" but never did live up to the hype. He was a great athlete, but for some reason something just didn't click.

Flutie it was said, was too short, too slow, too unlike the 6-4 220lb Johnson. But Flutie won games, he had something you couldn't coach, an ability to do special things in-game.

In that season, Flutie had a 10-5 record until he was benched in favor of Rob Johnson. The Bills season ended in a playoff loss with Johnson at qb.

I'm not saying Mohler is the next Flutie obviously, as he hasn't accomplished anything yet. Just that Bohl was a lot like Phillips in the sense that Mertens (Johnson) was supposed to be the man, results and consequences be damned.
