    Default 3-8 to the playoffs?

I was thinking about how feasible it would be for us to make the playoff this year coming off a 3-8 season so I started digging into past playoff teams and what record they were coming off of. Here's a list of last year's playoff teams and what their record was the previous season. Only two teams had losing records the season before, with SFA coming off a 4 win season.

2009 playoff teams and 2008 records

    Montana...11-1
    Villanova...9-2
    Southern Illinois...9-2
    Richmond...9-3
    Appalacian State...10-2
    William & Mary...7-4
    SFA...4-8
    New Hampshire...10-2
    South Carolina State...10-2
    Eastern Washington...6-5
    Weber State...9-3
    Elon...8-4
    McNeese St...7-4
    Holy Cross...7-4
    Eastern Illinois...5-7
    SDSU...7-5

There was only one team that made the 2008 playoffs that was coming off a losing record in 2007, and the next worst previous season record was 7-4

2008 playoff teams and 2007 records

    James Madison...9-3
    Appalacian State...9-2
    Montana...11-0
    Villanova...7-4
    Cal Poly...7-4
    UNI...11-0
    Wofford...8-3
    Richmond...9-2
    South Carolina State...7-4
    New Hampshire...7-4
    Texas State...4-7
    Colgate...7-4
    SIU...10-1
    Eastern Kentucky...9-2
    Liberty...8-3

Remember the 2007 Bison team that just founds ways to win games. Then, remember the 2009 Bison team that always found a way to screw up and lose games. Those two teams are not separated by much in the area of talent, although QB play is huge.

    The difference in 2009:
    Poor QB Play
    Poor coaching chemistry
catestophic penalities with regularity due to lack of discipline
Weak secondary and a defense that was just lost at times
No confidence or determination at times
team that was frustrated from losing

For those people that say, "3-8, it will take years to turn this around", they are flat out wrong. Just a change in attitude and some confidence with last year's team and they are 6-5. I will not be surprised with a significant turn around. If we don't win 6 games, I will be very surprised.

You also have to understand that they had less time to condition themselves, and had an abbreviated spring practice due to the flood. Couple that with at least 6-7 players getting kicked off the team for run-ins with the law, and that gives you what we saw on the field.

Full spring practice this year, great transfers, only one run-in with the law, full summer conditioning, and I think we will be greatly improved.

I'm not going to go back any further tonight, but obviously teams turn things around year after year and make the playoffs coming off terrible seasons. I completely agree with Herd, we have the opportunity to get to the playoffs this year. The talent is there, the depth is there, the coaching staff is there, etc. We just need to stay healthy and have the ball bounce our way a few times...two things we've not seen the last two seasons at all.

First of all, a well funded, highly followed, tradition rich program like NDSU should never have back to back piss poor seasons. The 6-5 and 3-8 seasons are primarily on Bohls back for failing to recruit QB's and not having a disciplined team.
So to answer your question, yes, NDSU should be able to make the playoffs in 2010. If the fugly bunnies can do it the Bison should make it most every year!

Bad luck and injuries kilkee us too. Should have been 500 or better. Paschal fumble at 1. Phantom penalty last play. 2 games right there. How about Mertens throw across the line.

Those are interesting statistics. An additional thing in favor or teams being able to do it this year, such as NDSU, is that FCS has a 20 team format
