With the exception of the Gamecocks and North Dakota State, the two least-known teams still alive for a shot at the Women's College World Series, the rest of the 16-team Super Regional field looks like something one would see during the final days of the football bowl season.

Indeed, the Gamecocks and Bison are playing with the really big — um — boys of college softball now and carry the banner for all the small programs that harbor big-time dreams.

"I think it's very cool," JSU coach Jana McGinnis said. "It's good for softball. It gives the schools that are our size hope, or motivation, that, hey, look what Jacksonville State or North Dakota State has done; we can do it, too.

"I think it also shows you that softball has gotten so big, there's a lot more parity. Good players are going to the smaller schools because so many are playing. The crop is growing more and more — they all can't go to one school. There's just better softball out there and more to choose from. There's more parity."
