Default Hockey Team Up North in the Frozen Four

Bemidji State Beavers, the lowest seed beat Cornell to get into the Frozen Four last night.

    Congrats to the Beavers

The irony is, that unless the WCHA accepts them(looks unlikely unless another team applies), Bemidji will probably only have a team for 1 more season.

Congrats to the Beavers, the BEST hockey team in Minnesota or North Dakota.

It's hard to imagine Bemidji State dropping hockey, hockey is king there. I think they would hand on as an independent rather than drop hockey. With with their new hockey arena combined with their success in the tournament, I think hockey is safe in Bemidji.

It is exciting to see a team in Bemidji's position in the final 4 . . . rooting for them. But let's be honest:

Bemidji: The only team in the frozen 4 from MN-ND . . . Yes

Bemidji: The best team in MN-ND? . . . Not so much, maybe top 5.

Is the national champion in hockey each year the best team in the nation? Rarely, hockey is a diffent sport than most.

Tournaments with 1 game eliminations in hockey is like flippin coins. Do the best teams (identified over the coarse of the season) win? About 50% of the time.

I haven't seen anyone else saying what seems to be obvious to me. Bemidji making the Frozen Four is bad for UND and UM, so I don't really understand why thier fans are applauding thier efforts. Them making the Frozen Four shows how regional this sport has really become. When UND fans in the future say they are proud of thier team for making the Frozen Four, naysayers will always point to Bemidji State and say if a small regional school in the middle of nowhere in Minnesota can do it. It must not be that great of an accomplishment. Just my two cents.
