Although UND advertises as a Premier Research University, THE Premier Research University is NDSU. In the recent Spring 2008 edition of Bison Briefs, the following numbers appeared.
NDSU fared well, ranking in the top 100 in several categories, in the National Science Foundation's national snapshot of research and development statistiacs for fiscal year 2006, the latest year for which statistics are available.
NDSU ranks 127 out of 640 research universities in the United States, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The ranking is based on total research expenditures reported to the foundation during fiscal 2006. NDSU reported $103.8 million in research expeditures. When ranked by research and development expenditures among 517 research universities without a medical school, NDSU ranks 42. This is how the programs are ranked:
Agricultural Sciences- 27 in total expenditures and federally financed research expenditures.
Social Sciences - 40 with 25 by federal
Physical Sciences- 70 with 60 by federal
Psychology- 84 both
Chemistry- 95 both
Life Sciences -113 ranked in research expenditures among 600 universities and colleges.
