Report: TCU, Sutton meet about job
By MIKE BROWN World Sports Writer

Oral Roberts basketball coach Scott Sutton met with Texas Christian University officials about the school's vacant head-coaching position Tuesday and is considered a top candidate for the job, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported on its Web site, quoting "a source with knowledge of the situation."

TCU officials also met Tuesday with former University of Tulsa head coach Buzz Peterson, also a top candidate, according to the Star-Telegram.

Sutton, who has guided the Golden Eagles to a 168-111 record in nine seasons and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, did not return a call to his cell phone.

ORU athletic director Mike Carter, reached by phone, said "we're not going to comment on anything," when asked if TCU officials had sought permission to talk to Sutton.

TCU athletic director Danny Morrison would not comment on the search and said he does not have a defined timeline for hiring a coach, the Star-Telegram said.

"We're continuing to work through the process. We're excited about the interest in this position," Morrison said.

It has been estimated that Sutton would, at the very least, double his ORU salary, believed to be in the $175,000-$200,000 range, with a jump to the higher-prestige Mountain West Conference. Sutton turned down a similar move to become head coach at Wichita State last year.

Isn't this the second year in a row where he's flirted with another school? Last year he was 99% gone and backed out at the last minute I think... He needs to shit or get off the pot.

He flirted with Wichita State last year --> not a big enough jump up in my opinion. Good idea for him to stay at ORU until a bigger conference comes calling. Mountain West plays good basketball and pays well. Would be surprised if he didn't take this job if offered.

Similar to Miles -- declined UNC-Wilmington (CAA). Took Mountain West Colorado State job the next year.

Similar to Aaron Johnston at SDSU -- declined UW-Green Bay last year. Takes _________ job this year????

Sutton no longer interested in TCU job

By Mike Brown 3/27/2008 10:49 PM

Oral Roberts basketball coach Scott Sutton told the Tulsa World late Thursday night that he has pulled his name out of contention for the Texas Christian coaching job.

Sutton was believed to be one of two top candidates to replace former Horned Frogs head coach Neil Dougherty, who was fired last week, along with former University of Tulsa head coach Buzz Peterson.

Sutton met with TCU athletic director Danny Morrison on Tuesday and said he talked with him again on Thursday.

But Sutton withdrew from contention after meeting Thursday with ORU athletic director Mike Carter, along with Mart Green, who donated $70 million to the school, and Green's wife, Diana.

''We discussed a lot of things and (the Greens) wanted to get across the feeling that they wanted the best for ORU, whether athletically or academically,'' Sutton said. ''I'm excited about ORU's future. It's brightest days may lie ahead.''

The Fort Worth Star Telegram, quoting sources, was reporting Friday that Sutton received a six-figure increase (at least $100,000) in his ORU salary, and that Sutton's assistants also received salary increases.......

Class guy, coach Sutton. It's also good to see a conference-mate step up and do what is needed to keep a quality coach. I hope we are in that position soon.

Aaron Johnston is not looking at any job this year other than returning to a loaded Jackrabbit team looking to win the Summit League regular season for the second year in a row and then winning the Summit post-season tourney and entering the Big Dance.
    Go Jackrabbits!

Good coaches are rarely looking for new jobs...good jobs come looking for them. Some higher-profile jobs are open right now.

I saw tonight on ESPN. His brother resigned at Oklahoma State. Do you think he would be in line for the OSU job? Or will they go away from the Sutton family.
