Re: JMU Inks Mike Houston to a 10 Year Extension
That buyout must be quite low. If he's supposedly being talked about for FBS jobs why would he sign for 10 years if he can't get out fairly easy?

Of the buyout can be really high, and they know that an FBS school would pay it to them.
Re: JMU Inks Mike Houston to a 10 Year Extension
The years mean very little. Bohl signed his 8 year extension in January of '13... was gone less than a year later.

McFeely with some of the details of the new contract....
The basics are this:
- Houston’s base salary will be $390,113 per year, with the possibility of raises but nothing guaranteed.
- He will be paid $50,000 if he is still head coach of James Madison on Feb. 1, 2018.
- He will receive $125,000 per year through the length of the contract for media and fundraising appearances, paid for by private donations.
- If Houston resigns to take another coaching job, he will owe the school a buyout based on when he resigns and the school he goes to.
The buyout looks like this:
- If Houston resigns prior to Jan. 31, 2020: Payment to the university of $500,000 for a Conference USA, Mountain West, Mid-American Conference or Sun Belt institution; $750,000 for an American Athletic Conference institution; and $1 million for a Power Five conference member.
- If Houston resigns between Feb. 1, 2020 and Jan. 31, 2023: Payment to the university of $350,000 for a Conference USA, Mountain West, Mid-American Conference or Sun Belt institution; $500,000 for an American Athletic Conference institution; and $750,00 for a Power Five conference member.
- If Houston resigns between Feb. 1, 2023 and Jan. 31, 2026: Payment to the university of $250,000 for a Conference USA, Mountain West, Mid-American Conference or Sun Belt institution; $350,000 for an American Athletic Conference institution; and $500,000 for a Power Five conference member.
- If Houston resigns after Feb. 1, 2026: Payment to the university of $150,000 for a Conference USA, Mountain West, Mid-American Conference or Sun Belt institution; $250,000 for an American Athletic Conference institution; and $500,000 for a Power Five conference member.

The buyout fees don't seem like much, especially for P5 schools.

Aren't they? I mean how do they compare to say Bohl's last contract or other FCS coaches?

It is but $1 million is a nice little payday for the school.
I think his extension keeps him at JMU thru 2020 unless a P5 comes along and that is kind of rare for a P5 to hire an FCS coach.
