A bit surprising but that program hasn't been "great" for awhile and considering the recruiting areas in TX and OK they should be way better then they've been. Will be interesting to see who they hire.
Twitter...what a crappy way to find out you are out of a job!
I was surprised he wasn't gone already having gone 14-17 last year. 8-22 this year meant he was gone a couple months ago. ORU hasn't gone to the NCAA tournament in almost 10 years after a strong run three or four years in a row. They moved back to the Summit from the Southland thinking it would be an open door into the tournament...that didn't work out so well. Recruiting upstart athletes that will play ball (and ORU BB has had their share of thugs) into a place like ORU is not the simplest of things to accomplish given all of the "rules" that go with a bible belt evangelic university.
Total classless move to let him find out via Twitter. Wowza!!
Wow, guy of his tenure deserved better, feel bad for him but also who knows what was going on behind the scenes
the twitter thing was wrong according to a few sources
With his lack of success I am not surprised he was fired but the way he was fired was not cool at all.
His lack of success lately had more to do with new recruiting restrictions then his ability to coach and recruit. Sutton is a classy guy who should have left that dump years ago.

All of this makes it clear how we got one of their key assistants up here. I don't know how they find a good coach with all the BS swirling around the program, their fans should be calling for the president's head.
This is from Billbury who played at ORU before transferring to VCU...

“That job will be a task to be successful in as long as the president is judging players before he even meets them.”

Everybody knew Scott Sutton was Eddie's son and that was as much class as the program was ever going to get. So to dump him this way was completely classless. Headed to Tulsa this weekend so I'll get the inside scoop although Golden Eagle may know more than my relatives.
Can we dump ORU for UMKC right now? I'd take that trade in a heartbeat.
Only thing good about UMKC is that they are in Kansas City but no one cares about UMKC not even UMKC's mom cares about UMKC.
Most people in KC are either Kansas, Kansas State, or Missouri fans. UMKC is usually an after thought.
Not sure if my brother in law (ORU grad) got this straight but he heard Scott was told to fire his brother (an assistant coach?) and he refused and then he got fired.
That seems to be the story out of Tulsa. It went something like this:
Sutton had two years left on his current contract. Much like the situation with our VB coach, he was basically told his contract was not going to be renewed. He was give two choices: 1. Leave now; 2. Stay for one more year. Option #2 came with a stipulation. Sutton was told he had to fire his brother and hire his own replacement as an assistant. Over the course of the season, the new assistant coach would take over all the duties of the head coach and Sutton would become a figurehead. The ORU president thought Sutton would actually like this choice since it would give him a farewell lap around the Summit. Surprisingly enough, Sutton didn't think much of this plan. He told his lawyer to reject the option, but thought that the rejection would lead to more negotiation. That's why he was a little surprised when he heard that he had been fired(after his wife and/or daughter learned about the firing through twitter).
All this comes from the ORU messageboard.
ORU has hired Baylor assistant Paul Mills to replace Sutton...
