McFeely article about Skarphol
http://www.inforum.com/news/3928221-...s-isolationism
While Bob is not a perfect guy he does have some legit points imho. Interesting take by McFeely. I don't agree or disagree. How much does the ND tax payer "subsidize" international and non-resident students? How long does it take to get residency? Has anyone ever published that info and how would one find it?
Discuss.

Re: McFeely article about Skarphol
Thank you, Mike. Obvious grasp at power over NDUS and the State Board is obvious.

Re: McFeely article about Skarphol
I'm normally not a huge fan of McFeely, but I feel he's dead on with this one.
Pres and NDSU are trying to better themselves, what's wrong with that?
-
Re: McFeely article about Skarphol
Hard to believe that I actually agree with something McFeely wrote.
The fact of the matter is ND has fricking 11 universities for a state population of less then 800k people total. Where does Mr. Skarphol expect the universities to get students? He does realize that is their job right? Does he seriously believe that we can fill 11 institutions with nothing but ND students? Sounds like a UND grad.
It would be one thing if he was interested in eliminating a few institutions and streamlining the others but his end game is nothing more then an NDSU witch hunt.

McFeely should stop picking on Bob---he has been a relentless advocate for higher education.

If Skarphol said the world is flat, Jabba the Port would be on Team Skarpohl. All reasoning and common sense has been thrown out the window and everything becomes a conservative or liberal issue depending on who says what first.

Re: McFeely article about Skarphol
Typically students like this pay full board - $18,000+ per year.
The University of Illinois has made a fortune off of this.
Things do change if they are on assistantship, with tuition waivers.

So we typically make money off international and non-residents?

Re: McFeely article about Skarphol
Many grad students teach classes and do research. Tution wavers vs hiring is a plus for a university.
There was an article in the Forum this week about how these grads stay and that many many foreign residents are highly educated.
Many people dont understand what a research university is, unfortunately they are vocal. What it is not is a trade school. We need both. Alot.
A few years ago the university sent out an e mail that listed how much the university gets in tax dollars and how much it receives in grants and endowments and such. If complaining was proportional to how much the complainers money went to the school, it would be much more quiet.

Non-ND oil laborers = Great! Non-ND students = Bad. Great vision for the future.

Yeah, scratching my head over that philosophy.
If you want a 21st century economy, you better have a lot of STEM folks around.

Sometimes.
I was an acquaintance of an NDSU student 15 years ago who's family in India was happy to pay almost $20,000 per year for him to get a US education.
That is what the University of Illinois and I suspect NDSU may be after. Upper class Indians who want their kids to get a degree in the US.

This may factor in, but the real value comes when that same student launches a startup, or fills a much needed STEM position for a firm in the state of North Dakota. Reaching out to students in these fields, wherever they may be from, is an investment in future industry and workforce for the state.
-
Re: McFeely article about Skarphol
Nothing here unusual at all, just because it's North Dakota people have to get their pants in a bunch. I thought Skarphol was retiring, the sooner the better!

Re: McFeely article about Skarphol
Funny he isn't complaining about all the foreign students in the Aerospace Program at UND. They are almost all foreign as USA students cant afford $150,000.00 for an education in that department paying for fuel and flight time only to get a job for $10.00 an hour upon graduating.

Re: McFeely article about Skarphol
My wife is as American as they come and she got a tuition waiver AND a stipend at NDSU.
Of course she taught more classes than an adjunct instructor making twice as much.
-
Re: McFeely article about Skarphol
How much would it have cost to build Bob's pet project UND-Tioga?

She wouldnt have had to teach if she was at und and could play hockies

Re: McFeely article about Skarphol
Reminds me of the racist old guy who says "I don't want to pay for those damn immigrants!"
All these are are scholarships. Except they are for top foreign students.

Easy, Senor. There are many good people in the Tioga/Stanley/Bowbells/Crosby area. Don't let Mr. Skarphol be your guide for how the normal folks up there think.

Re: McFeely article about Skarphol
Why can't we see universities as a potential attractor of world-class researchers to North Dakota? Heck, if Tommy from Minneapolis comes to NDSU while his tuition is being "subsidized" by the North Dakota taxpayer, is Tommy not paying money to live and probably work in-state? All of a sudden you're getting another source of income and transaction taxes that otherwise wouldn't have been here.
Is Skarphol aware that the state can grow independently of North Dakota residents never leaving and having kids that grow up here?

its small time ass backward ND thinking, these same people see population growth as a problem not a positive, its very sad that people like Bob are in State leadership roles, there are many more just lke him

It appears Skarphol is residing in 1966, when the world was much larger and North Dakota much smaller. He's long been at war with higher ed, despises NDSU, dislikes Bresciani and likely doesn't think much of Fargo. None of which makes him unique in the Legislature, by the way. There seems to be a cabal of mostly western lawmakers who believe that "higher education" is defined as the second floor of their hometown school.

As I've said before, I'd do it all again... maybe next time I wouldn't transfer in - just come in as a freshman.

BINGO! Look at the new STEM startups in Fargo here, then look at the amount of NDSU Grads they employ.
Hint: It's a pretty hefty percentage.

Why don't you do your own research? Clearly, he was talking from anecdotal experience.
For trolls, one demand is just a gateway for a new set of questions.
Prove that you are worth the effort.
The state just published a report that 76% (!!!) of naturalized immigrants calling ND home have doctoral degrees. Now, a non-troll could probably extrapolate some idea about how much income tax those folks are paying without having to be dragged, kicking and screaming, every step of the way. My gut tells me that you're not one of those people. I'd love to be proven wrong.

I don't have to do the research. I didn't even disagree. I thought the poster may have had some data or a link to a forum article as I thought his post indicated he had by dropping the "Hint: it's a pretty big percentage " line.
But to each their own. I saw that thing about the 76% deal and thought that was pretty crazy.

SERIOUS QUESTION. if I start a gofundme account on my BISONATION Facebook page, think we could raise $8,300 by Tuesday ? We will donate $8301 to that dept in honor of bob skarphol, The $1 we will hand deliver to bob in tioga....
