FBS move fans. Here's a good read

The report triggered a new round of complaints that UMass leaders invested scarce public dollars that could have been better spent when they elevated the football team in 2012 to the NCAA’s top Football Bowl Subdivision.
“What becomes clearer each year is that this is a huge financial disaster for the university,’’ said Max Page, a co-chairman of the school’s Ad Hoc Committee on FBS Football, which prepared the report.
heard lakes on Bison Rewind last night complaining about how there's no competition in FCS.

Umass is an absolute disaster but I knew they would be disaster from day one.
Horrible...horrible decision to play your home games two hours away from campus. They needed to get their facility issues straightened out before jumping.

Average attendence of 3 other playoff games last week was less than 4,000. He might be on to something.

he is. Lakes is one of the better ambassadors for NDSU that isnt employed by the actual college. He sees things clearly more than a lot of people and can project moves before any of us. a move to FBS would only be beneficial for NDSU. GT has to be making phone calls. FCS is just embarrassing when you look at the interest in other schools. NDSU needs to sell high

This for sure. It has become quite clear that this team is playing in the wrong division.
NDSU deserves better than FCS.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
I figured I wouldn't change the pro FBS crowd but it would be one of the dumbest things that we could do.
Wanna play in the Mountain West? Trade UNI and SDSU for CSU, AF, and Wyoming.
Hope roadwarrior has a LOT of air miles.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
UMASS is a terrible comparison to NDSU. What do you think morale would be like around here if we were using the metrodome for our home games? Plus, they are firmly a basketball school in a state that is into pro sports, not college.

I agree in some aspects, but the thought of the financial issue of moving up is scary. NDSU just doesn't have funds for that. Those funds can't be made up in attendance or teammakers either. It has to come from some other source.
IMO at the rate NDSU is succeeding in football, NDSU might just get to be too big for it. Hell, they had to alter their NC events because of the number of our fanbase down there.

Will you be happy competing in a 3rd level of football in the playoffs every year with teams like Pitt State, UND, St Cloud, and some of the lower level upper competitive FCS teams like New Hampshire? Because that's where this is all moving towards.

Yes, I agree. Making the comparison to Pitt State and SCSU is absurd though. Moving right up to the bifurcated "top" level in which there is an artificial ceiling is not the answer.
Think about FCS right now. Would you like NDSU to compete in the SWAC? No championships, only silly exhibition games to line your trophy case.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
Everyone would love a move up. I would.
It took us two years too long to raise the extra two million dollars just to finish the BSA project that was already line item cut just to bring it under budget.
Where does the yearly millions come from? Not the state, they won't give us anything that they won't give the community college up north.
We would roll with the majority of the mid majors. no question. Gotta find a way to find it.

Great point, if NDSU moves up tomorrow they will play in the BCS bowl this year. Thanks for pointing this out to us and helping us realize there are zero things that can go wrong if you move up to BCS and have no conference. It will all be perfect like you said!!

As I said in the other thread. We are in no financial shape to compete in the "second" tier fbs programs. The mountain west comes here, beats us up and takes our lunch money (coaches). Right Craig Bohl? Right Tim Miles? If the FBS is breaking up, we got some serious work to do.

We are in good position to compete with the Sun Belt and MAC. Not much separates us from those two conferences.
The MWC would be at the top of the heap.

2012 Budgets for Sun Belt Football Schools:
$28,559,494 – New Mexico State*
$26,886,756 – Texas State
$25,770,262 – Western Kentucky
$24,540,533 – Georgia State
$19,060,589 – South Alabama
$18,644,606 – Appalachian State*
$18,584,216 – Idaho*
$17,440,897 – Louisiana-Lafayette
$16,504,664 – Troy
$15,307,308 – Arkansas State
$11,335,102 – Georgia Southern*
$11,323,485 – Louisiana-Monroe
NDSU's budget would be near the bottom of that list.
and that's the Sun Belt which sucks mightily.

Where is all the money coming from? It is not about beating MAC teams.......it is about the money. Al Carlson would have a friggin boner out for NDSU if we were to start that right now.

We would be ahead of Troy as of now..but a move requires at minimum $5 million addition to our budget. Which would put us close to the top.

Al Carlson can't do anything if the money is raised privately...However, I agree and ask, "Who's going to write the check to make the move?"

I don't care what Carlson thinks.
If NDSU moves to the FBS...you can add $1.5 million automatically...that is the cut the lower FBS schools get from the playoffs. Money games would increase in value as well. These leagues also get some TV money.
There is a gap that we would have make up though. I won't deny that. How big that gap is, I'm not sure.

Oh, well. If that's all we need. 5 million a year every year. And we're near the top. Let's just do it tomorrow then.

5 Million a year to be near the middle. Of the SUN BELT. Right now the budget is near 15-17 million. That would be squarely in the middle.

Our budget right now is 16.8 million.
NIU competes very well with $23 million budget in the MAC.

Never underestimate the power of Al Carlson to do something colossally stupid.

The 2012 budget was 16.8 million so we could easily be in the middle of the pack. The size of the budget doesn't tell the complete story either. It depends how you allocate your dollars too. For us football is king obviously

That's a difference of $6.2 million dollars. Every year, to compete in the same division with schools spending $100 million dollars.

You're naive if you don't think Hot Al has anything to say about this. The donors are tapped out. Look at how long it took to fund the BSA project. Gene can't just shit checks when he wants. So........we need another$15 million per year to do this effectively as well as more stadium space later. Now.......before you come up withthe idea of a larger oudoor stadium....how well would games in November be attended? If the weather is crappy.....not very well.
FBS sounds fun, but you gotta deal with reality.
Al Carlson would look like this after he heard about NDSU going FBS........

Not completely accurate because the budget depends on many things. First and foremost cost of scholarships. That's why it looks like Harvard has a massive budget. Ndsu gets in state tuition rates for the tri state area, the source of most players.we also spend more on football

Exactly. A move to FBS will require major increases in annual revenue. It is not going to come from the state of ND, as much as some of you think it should. To generate substantially more revenue we would need a bigger new stadium with premium seating options. Also, I don't think an outdoor stadium is a viable option in Fargo. I don't know how we would pay for a 30,000 seat indoor football stadium.

I know that and they seem to be doing a good job which is why I brought them up.
NDSU would make up a chunk of that money just be moving up. But there would still be a significant chunk the school would need to raise itself. I am not denying that.

Al Carlson to me is irrelevant. NDSU has proven it can get what it wants done when it comes the legislature.
My concern is doing this right and the stadium issue is very relevant.

We don't belong in the MAC geographically and they surely don't want us. Where is this FBS conference for us to join? MWC seems like the most viable, but we would need huge upgrades (football stadium, basketball arena, competitiveness of basketball program) to interest them. Oh, we might have to move our state, too.

The MAC would be football only and I'm not sure they would go for it but there is no way all-sports would ever be an option I agree with that.
The MWC would have to lose teams in order for NDSU to get a look. If NDSU joined it would be a different conference.
Maybe a new conference could be created, Idaho's AD has throw around that idea.

Geography was one of my first points. If NDSU went FBS it would do it completely alone as no other schools in the area are even close to making a move like that.
Remember that one really fun FBS road trip every year? That's every away game. That would be terrible.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
I want to make this clear....nowhere in my posts have I said NDSU should go or shouldn't go. I'm just presenting what I think it would take. I have always been on the fence about going FBS....the stadium issue and conference situation have always been two things that concern me.
