Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
After last year issues---Dupree and Miller; I feel this team still has issues. It's talked a lot about being a family, but I don't see a very tight family.
You're supposedly best player, Paul Miller, is definitely not a leader. I think he's attitude has brought down entire team. It's frustrating watching him play and if his jumper isn't falling to affect rest of his game.
Khy, being a PG, decision making is not good to put it nicely. I don't think he sees floor well---It's not good when you're PG leads team in turnovers especially when doesn't dominate ball in half court offense.
AJ, I've been looking or waiting for him to step up his game---now for year and a half. He went through 4-5 games didn't even look to shoot or be aggressive on offense and WE NEED his point production.
Deng, needs more playing time as I think has high potential---will see if brought along slowly.
I feel for Coach Richman as it feels like there are more chemistry issues with team that are holding them back---perhaps I'm wrong but team is not progressing like I hoped.
The points I made above could be fixed----but I think are big from them being a 18-14 team and bowing out early in Summit Tourney or coming together and being a potential NCAA Tournament team.
TELL ME I'M WRONG and Overreacting

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Coaching is my MAJOR concern. & not 1 NDSCS transfer since Andre Smith and Richmond's Dad is the president & basketball coach legend down there!!
-
Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Is this all insider information or perception based? Pretty easy to say there are issues when we have seen them for a total of 8 times when they have been practicing every day for a month and half.
As far as Miller being a leader, who says he should be a leader? He's never once assumed that role that I have seen. The best players aren't always the leaders.
With that being said the team has a long ways to go to be where they want to be by the end of the year. Good thing conference hasn't even started.
Don't feel bad for Richman. A lot of what's happening on the floor, specifically the offense, is something he has control over. Let alone playing players he feels shouldn't be on the court, if that's even the case which we don't know.

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
During the presser today, it sure sounded like lineup changes are coming.

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
I have watched 4 games, it appears the players are fatigued right from the start of the games. Bad ball handling and terrible shooting. Hopefully some rest will help and a leader will emerge.
-
Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Personally getting tired of coach constantly taking about "culture" and "great kids" on the team at pressers. Time to coach and win, not talk about team culture.

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Can we put this thread, specifically the stuff about Paul Miller in the Hall of Shame yet?

I will second that!

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
I will give my opinion in 2 months. Major changes in how this team and Paul has reacted in the last 2 weeks but it has only been 2 weeks. Man we are going the right way though.
I will take this every day over the coach to the south who refuses to change from a defense style that continually gets shredded.

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Dex's play has lifted this team. He is the leader by example, and it has been consistent.

Dex's play has been there all year. What has changed is Paul Miller stepped up BIGTIME! Couple that with Khy playing better and the freshman improving every game.
Dex has definitely with his play all year. I said earlier we needed Miller and AJ to start leading. Thought we needed both to step up. I was wrong. Miller has taken his play to another level and AJ has been average.
Huge props to the coaching staff! Whatever they have done to light a fire under Miller is impressive. He looks like a totally different player. Could be CPY if he continues.
-
Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Paul is a big time talent who is ultra competitive. I am sure the coaching staff said somethings to him but it was much more about Paul getting out of his own head and starting to make some shots. He has been on an absolute tear the last couple of weeks!

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
I hope Dex taught us all one thing.....kids improve the longer they are here. Dex wasn't a fan favorite when he was recruited. Dex wasn't a fan favorite as a younger kid. Now he is idolized by everyone. I absolutely LOVE his leadership. I hope we are patient with some of the younger kids. I know it takes time to develop and everyone is different. I couldn't be more excited with some of our youth on this team. Going to be fun for years to come. Congrats to Big Dex on his continued development. What an impressive young kid

I think what he meant as not too many people expected much out of a 6'6" center from Bismarck when we recruited him, I was one who was curious if he had the game for this level but I trusted our staff wouldn't have brought him in if they didn't think so and he's absolutely been a favorite of mine, nobody gives more effort than him and shows that heart and determination can take you a long way.

They aren't discussed as current affairs though. That's the problem "Paul's not a leader." "Dave can't coach offense". "AJ is soft". "Dylan is worthless." "Why can't we get NDSCS transfers?" "They're dumb for not starting Dexter". These aren't current events. They are sweeping declarations and overreactions. They were dumb then and they are dumb now. All Dave has done since taking over a team that graduated basically everyone is put an outstanding product on the floor for 2.5 seasons.
-
Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Some of the criticisms were fair and some were a little ridiculous.
The team has really turned the corner after having a rough stretch of games. Dylan is giving the minutes everyone expected from him, AJ is staying out of foul trouble while being more aggressive offensively, the team is taking better care of the basketball.
Dave has done a great job on a coaching the team up and making some adjustments here and there.

You can see the the thoughts of Dexter during recruiting in this thread: http://www.bisonville.com/forum/show...409#post639409
Burgundy was right on the money in post #1.
You gotta take these "Sky is falling" threads with a grain of salt... I bet this thread was started in response to a disappointing game. Well, I've seen enough game day threads to know that people react very emotionally... cripes, the SDSU game (that NDSU won) is a perfect example. SDSU was playing zone and NDSU wasn't hitting outside shots - result was a big halftime deficit and a lot of people were freaking out. Luckily the coach and team kept their poise or that'd have been a huge loss. Anyway, I guess people need to vent, and I bet that most of the time they cool down...

Yeah, this thread was started right after the UND in Fargo debacle. Just to illustrate how far this team came in just 6 weeks:
Paul Miller:
12/7 vs UND: 0 points, 0-8 FG, 0-4 3PT, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 TO
1/19 vs FW: 33 points, 9-15 FG, 7-10 3PT, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 TOs
1/21 @ WIU: 19 points, 6-9 FG, 4-4 3PT, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 0 TOs
Khy Kabellis:
12/7 vs UND: 2 points, 1-10 FG, 0-4 3PT, 1 rebound, 2 assist, 5 TOs
1/19 vs FW: 25 points, 8-13 FG, 5-9 3PT, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 TOs
AJ Jacobson
12/7 vs UND: 7 points, 3-8 FG, 1-5 3PT, 4 rebounds, 0 assist, 1 TO
1/21 @ WIU: 23 points, 8-11 FG, 6-7 3PT, 6 rebounds, 0 assists, 3 TOs
Combined:
12/7 vs UND: 9 points, 4-26 FG, 1-13 3PT, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 7 TOs,
1/19 vs FW: 64 points, 19-33 FG, 13-20 3PT, 12 rebounds, 9 assists, 6 TOs
1/21 @ WIU: 46 points, 16-29 FG, 10-12 3 PT, 17 rebounds, 9 assists, 6 TOs
Just goes to show that this team goes as their backcourt goes.
Or, how about this one....
Dylan Miller:
12/7 vs UND: 2 minutes, 0 points, 0-0 FG, 0 rebounds, 0 blocks
1/19 vs FW: 13 minutes, 6 points, 3-4 FG, 0 rebounds, 4 blocks
1/21 @ WIU: 17 minutes, 11 points, 4-5 FG, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks
Consistency is key but if those 4 guys stay at the level they've been at over the last 2 games or just have a minimal drop-off in play this team will be dancing in March.

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
The team has been on fire since the Denver game. Not sure what happened out there but it's been a completely different team since that game. Everyone seems to be playing with much more energy and urgency. Hope they haven't peaked too soon and can keep it up through tourney time.

The crazy part is Saturday's game was the first full complete 40 minute game we've played all season. Even against IPFW as well as we played there was a lot of lapses on defense so in my opinion I think we are still on the way to the peak. Guys like Dylan, Tyson, Deng and Jared are settling into the rotation and playing more consistently, especially Dylan, if he keeps this up and we can continue to shoot at a high level we are going to be a very tough team to beat down the stretch as I know Dave will get the defense back on track like we saw on Saturday.

I agree that the WIU game was the most complete game they've played this season. If they play like that they will be tough to beat.

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Team issue was 100% coaching issue.
Dave Richman left a lot to be desired as a head coach this year.
- Random offense with no set plays to get the team easy looks when the offense is struggling.
- inability to develop a bench.
- inability to hold individual players accountable for their struggles. If a player is struggling, pull him for crying out loud.
- absolutely no adjustment for dams cracking throughout the game. Absolutely no adjustment whatsoever.
- call a Timeout for crying out loud.
The worst thing of all, if the biggest game of the year, it looked like he just quit on those players. The way they came out uninspired sure is a reflection of the coaching staff as well.
Just unbelievable.

Yup, can't argue with any of this. Our offense looked like a first game of the year city league team in the 2nd half!

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Unbelievable how this team just can't nut up and perform. Look at our "bigs". Other than Dex, they haven't done shit since MB graduated. The NE kid sits on the bench, Miller looks lost and has zero back to the basket game, Deng appears to be timid and a total bust..

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
if Matt Larson allows this team to play in the cbi or cit, he should resign. Kory Brown had it right last year. he said " NCAA or Bust, we aint playing "

Miller will need to take his game to the next level next year or it's going to be a tough year.
Deng isn't timid or a bust. He attacks the basket more ferociously than anyone on the team but he's super raw and didn't play basketball for very long in high school. He's kind of a mystery right now. He's not built to be a 4 or 5. He's built like a 2 or a 3. Kind of a tweener. Are we going to pack some weight on him to be a big or have him fine tune his skills play the 2 or 3? But he's clearly super athletic. For height and weight, he's closer to AJ and Paul Miller than Dylan Miller than Eliason.
-
Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Deng is kind of like Tray, he can defend bigger guys but offensively he is more of a 3. Tray was much more polished though, especially defensively. Deng needs to really improve his defense, I'm sure Dave wanted to play him more but you need to balance winning and developing.
Miller and Eliason are fives, I kind of wish Spencer had played more, he was fairly active when he got minutes.
-
Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Here is a question for BV. Can anyone shed some light on player development of guys we rarely saw or never saw at all? Who are the leaders for more minutes based on performance? Who are starters and first couple off the bench?
I love the energy Spenser brings when he is out there but never got enough time to show much. Deng is raw and potential but games seems to fast yet for him. Wesenberg was basically MIA. Hunter and Irwin on the bench have no idea. Clements come back and be a defensive guy , was not great on offense.
-
Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
Like everyone else, I am disappointed on how the last half of the season unfolded. I believe in Coach Richman and think he will right the ship. However, Tim Miles might be available at the end of the season.

Re: Bison Basketball Team ISSUES
The weave is fine when they are in a rhythm and scoring, but when they go into those long dry spells, try something different!
I know Deng is young and raw, but I wish they would have played him more. It seemed like he rarely played later in the season.
I'm not sure what the issue was last night, but they looked like they didn't want to be there.
