JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
1) Trey Lance is good at football. I said he deserved the Payton all year, I didn't think he'd actually get it after they screwed Easton last year but wow. Greatest season of an NDSU player ever. 3 more years of this seems unfair. 30 carries for 166 today but not the player of the game imo. More on that later.
2) That 17 play half a quarter drive to start the game out made me nervous. We answered well. Trey put the team on his back and literally carried us. I spent the whole first half singing the praises of TR and cursing him the second half. Aside from that one pass up the seam didn't we end the game with like 7 straight Lance runs? Predictable to a fault.
3) If you tell me before the game that Trey runs 30 times and Watson's only touch goes for -12 yards I'd have said we probably lose. Safe to say our approach on offense was not what JMU prepared for.
4) I don't like JMU. Some of their fans seem ok but for the most part they're the new UNI for me. Fun to hate. With that being said they didn't quit. They fought hard and when it mattered their QB just made a bad decision on a play that never should have been called IMO. They run it inside there they probably score.
5) Hendricks is player of the game for me. That fake field goal was cold. That's the different with Entz from Bohl/CK imo. Neither of those guys have the guts to call that play. Hendricks houses it and then seals the game with a pick. Part of me selfishly wanted him to run that back, by the way. I felt it was a fitting end given the special on his family on the pregame. Magical stuff.
6) Cox took a snap at running back? He had a few huge plays, reminding me again that his closing speed is unlike anything we've seen at NDSU. He'll only get better. Which is scary.
7) Stupid penalties again. Has to end next year but the team will be more mature. Think about how young this team is, then make your Frisco reservations for next year.
8) Phoenix Sproles, welcome back. I wish we'd have sprinkled in more of those plays in the second half.
9) Thank you seniors.
10) The streak continues. Oregon, we're coming.

Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
One more thought on Lance. 3rd and 23 was a back breaking play. He looked like a man amongst boys out there at times.

Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Since day 1 we heard about Jimmy’s football IQ absolutely clutch in his final college football play. Such a phenomenal read.

And this play made Tyler call number 5 again and again. The way Tyler called number 5's number you'd almost think the guy had won the Walter Payton award or Jerry rice or something.

Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
JMU's final play call was pretty dumb I thought. They had 8 seconds and 2 timeouts.

Don't get me wrong. 4th and 2, there's only one guy I wanted with the ball.
It's the calls leading up to that 4th and 2 that frustrated me.
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Trey Lance is obscenely good at football.
Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, Zero picks, title game MVP, and 16-0. Easily the greatest FCS QB season in history.

Yeah was expecting that little screen to Stapleton

Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Excellent first half by the Bison
A middling second half - nearly frittered away the game.
Overall - Congratulations Bison, happy for you.
What to learn from this game: gotta keep the play calling unpredictable for the whole game, not just the first half.

Yeah I believe it was 4 or 5 Trey runs before that play
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
I don't want to see Lance run that often... at least, not until it's needed in the postseason. :) Man, talking about carrying the load on offense!

I wish that 4th and 2 went outside. If it goes outside we get the first. I guarantee it. Who cares WE WON!

Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Hendricks had a big pass breakup on the final drive, game sealing Int, and the fake fg TD. He was the MVP out there.
Really entertaining game. Bad play calling by NDSU really gave JMU new life late.
An entire 16 game season...and 0 Interceptions for Lance. That is unbelievable.
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Great job O-line. I said we wouldn’t be able to run and I was very wrong
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Watching the highlights post game it really stands out how beautifully executed that fake FG was.
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Orgeron you can thank us for gameday next fall.

Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Breath it in folks!!! Smells like another Championship!! All is well in the world today. Go Bison!!!

Reflecting on the season as a whole I feel like that was a bit of a theme in the running game.

His mom said she wants him to run every down and only gets worried when he is passing.

She obviously has Tyler Roehl's ear!

Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Thank you James Hendricks. Hell of a bison career. Love how those qb converts go out in style on the defense.
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
I think being up by one TD in the second half is the the most frustrating thing to see on our offensive play calling.
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Hendricks should be in the NDSU athletic HOF next year.
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Was looking for clarification on the knee being down by the holder on a fake field goal, and this popped up. Interesting that despite EWU being successful on their fake last year, it was James Hendricks that made the tackle that nearly kept the receiver out of the endzone…...…..then...…..today...…...there's Hendricks scoring on a fake FG.

Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
I know that the Bison wanted to beat NDSU by at least 17 points.
Still this was the National Championship game for NDSU against a very worthy playoff champion. The Bison can reflect on what the Bison should have done, but you just won your 8th NC.
NDSU kept their focus, didn't give up, and won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CONGRATS TO ALL THE BISON!

I agree, it was a bad call. NDSU did not utilize their running backs very well in this game (nor their receivers). As soon as the Bison lined up for this4th and 2 play, it looked like they were going to run another predictable Up-the-Middle play, which they did. Consequently, they did not get it. I felt the Bison had just opened the door big and wide for JMU and JMU took advantage on their next possession. Hendricks made a great play to intercept the ball with 5 seconds (or so) left and seal the game. But honestly, the Bison should not have gotten to that point. Nevertheless. happy for the W.
Play-calling will have to improve if NDSU is going to beat Oregon this fall.
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
0 interceptions in a season, over 300 attempts. Really mind boggling stuff.
Will it ever happen again?
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Now we get to show the undies another championship trophy next Saturday at the basketball game
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
Great season. 4th quarter was playing not to lose.
4th and 2 play should have been a jump pass. Anything other than what they did. No chance to improvise.
Lance can play football.
Nice rebuilding year.

Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
WDAYs post game show is awful.
It still says pre game show
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
I don’t care how many carries Lance had. When you’re in the Kentucky Derby, you ride your horse.
And the decision to go for and complete the successful fake field goal, coupled with the eventual win, puts Entz in the pantheon of great coaching calls of all-time.

And there's a guy in a jacket with all the national championships on it. He's going to have to put another one on there.

Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
If this keeps up, we're gonna get spoiled.

The fourth and 2 as still a pretty bad call. If you want to run Trey, that is fine, but don't go with a bunch formation and try to run it right up the middle. Either have him try to sprint around the corner, or go 3 or 4 wide and spread them out and let Trey pick a hole. That play had no chance of succeeding.

Boehl did call the fake punt in the first title game that jump started the Bison do the win.

WE MADE BAD CALLS!!!! And we still win the game against the VAUNTED JMU!!!

Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
The entire game I was expecting the Bison to pick one. The timing was perfect :) when it happened.
-
Re: JMU Post-Game Thoughts & Discussion
how about Bridges giving up only 1 reception to Polk

I don't know if that's comparable. Don't get me wrong, it's one of the most important plays in NDSU history but we needed a spark and got it.
If you give Bohl that same situation with the opportunity to go up 7 on a team that is moving the ball well. I think he takes that field goal 10/10 times.
