Re: Just an offseason stat
El Chapo's question: What else is there to accomplish at this level? Here's my list:
1. Men's basketball - become competitive in the Summit again and return & win in the NCAA tournament.
2. Women's basketball - become relevant
3. Volleyball - return to the days of domination early in the D-I transition
4. Wrestling - make inroads versus the rest of the Big 12

Wasn't it obvious he meant in football?

Couple pulled tidbits in 2015 NDSU spent ~$53,000 per student athlete.
by comparison MAC conference on average spent ~$63,000 and MWC spent ~$90,000
FWIW the U of Texas spent $307,000 per athlete
NDSU would need to increase spending $10,000-30,000 to be average in terms of $$ if moving up. Considering that the bottom half of FCS schools allocate more money to football %-wise than the top half and FCS, they cut other athletics programs and wind up around 500 student athletes. So spending on athletics would need to increase $5m-15m per year. But that does not include any upgrades or new facilities that would be needed before moving (indoor practice facility comes to mind).
Why is it always assumed you have to spends huge amounts of money to be successful? Do conferences have a minimum?

Re: Just an offseason stat
Not sure where the $100M more comes from unless we are talking the Top 15 FBS schools.
Think about this though, NDSU went from a budget of about $5M in 2000 to over $25M today. Not sure how much higher that can go at the FCS level as FB is the driver at NDSU.

JMU decided to NOT to go FBS in 2014 even though they were offered a spot in the Sun Belt.
One must also remember that when moving up there are probationary periods where your teams wont be eligible for bowl games--think Georgia Southern and you wont be eligible for conference bowl money splits or March madness money. So you have to have alot of money in reserve to make it through those periods of non-revenue.

You can do to NOT go FBS. Or you can do NOT to go FBS. But you can not to NOT to.

Yes, El Chapo was writing about football. I replied to emphasize that the athletic department is more than just football. Yes, excitement and support for football drives the department, but if that is screwed up then the whole department suffers. A catastrophic move to FBS would be catastrophic to so many other sports.
Re: Just an offseason stat
Lakes/El Chapo and minions should be happy as another thread has morphed into the FCS/FBS debate.

Re: Just an offseason stat
If NDSU wants to get to an FBS conference it won't be due to the football program.
Men's basketball having tons of success in the NCAA tournament would be the best catalyst to moving up.
Not football. That's a known commodity around the country.
