I was listening to an interview with Nick Saban the other day about losing underclassman and his conversations with them. He says he works with NFL scouts and helps his underclassmen put in for the draft grading system to see where they might be. He says if a young man is a first rounder, he insists they go. He was pretty adamant about potential 1st rounders needing to declare without question. Too much money out there for them to stay in college. He said it is really a case by case basis for the second round. He has encouraged some to stay if he thinks they can make up the money with another year in college. He says he treats discussing the NFL potential with his players as a business decision completely independent of his college program. When he talks about it he says part of why kids come to play for him is they know he and his staff will assist them in making the best informed decision. The bottom line is 1st rounders have to go and after that, maybe second rounders in some circumstances, but 3rd rounders and beyond should use college to improve their draft stock.
This is all interesting because I don't see this kid on anyone's draft list for next year. He is something like the 57th rated OLB. I don't know exactly how many OLBs are typically drafted, but I am pretty certain it isn't 50. Last year, the 23rd ranked OLB was projected to maybe be an outside chance of being drafted. So what happens is there is a good chance this young man doesn't get drafted. If he isn't drafted, there is a good chance he isn't on an NFL roster this fall. Now he isn't playing football for anyone. Maybe he explodes in workouts and someone gives him a chance, but being this far off the radar today doesn't look good for him. Farley is in a position where he can't say anything but that he supports the decision of one his players. There has to be something more there. I don't know how you give up the chance to showcase your talent for one more year of college while on scholarship. Especially on a team that is expected to contend which would garner some attention. UNI football players seem to get a pretty fair shot at the next level, so none of it makes any sense.
There's more here. It sounds like playing another year wasn't an option.💪
