We are a basketball school!
4 Division 1 Big Dances in 10 years > 7 FCS football titles
Don't even try and debate this, you are foolish if you do.
NDSU's will to win is un-matched in big spots.
the NATIONAL exposure for the BIG dance trumps fcs title game on sat 1pm in january.. NDSU will be on MILLIONS of Brackets!

Re: We are a basketball school!
Well... apples to oranges
Making the playoffs 40% of the time and winning 1 game vs winning the National Championship or making the semifinals 9 straight years. Wins over top Big Ten and Big 12 teams.
I want to see us be a basketball school though. Need to sustain the success and start packing the SHAC for that to happen. Need the revenue

Re: We are a basketball school!
I don't think Chapo knows how to do purple text. Just assume everything is purple.
-
Re: We are a basketball school!
They have to start bringing in better non-conference teams than the crap they are bringing in now.
-
Re: We are a basketball school!
No, we're not. If you want to say making the big dance 4 times brought more exposure than winning 7 FCS titles go ahead. It's a different type of exposure for each and each is great but a basketball school averages more than 2,000 for home attendance throughout the season. A basketball school makes more of an effort to schedule quality non-conference home games. A basketball school would pay their head coach more than ~200k a season. A basketball school would've renovated the BSA in a way that made more sense from a basketball standpoint.

So do you want the 40,000 seat football stadium since we now a basketball school?
I think from a money standpoint and national attention standpoint the Basketball tournament is a much bigger deal than the football championship. Locally and regionally, the football championships are perceived to be the bigger deal.

Basketball school? El Chapo is just warming up for the end of the month when he is off moderation.
-
Re: We are a basketball school!
LOLOLOL. Too good Chapo.
Now let's go get rocked by 30 in the first round! Show them what a basketball school looks like.

Re: We are a basketball school!
Hes not wrong. Nobody besides ndsu fans can recite the no name schools ndsu beat for fcs championships. They remember Iowa, k-state and Oklahoma wins when it matters.

I don't think he is right. I think you are right about the names, but when anyone outside of NDSU fans does mention an NDSU sport it is overwhelmingly football.

Re: We are a basketball school!
I've never once met someone while in another part of the country recognize NDSU because they have been in the NCAA Tourney. I have many times met people that know NDSU has a great football team.

NDSU beating Oklahoma in the Big Dance is still the #1 Biggest thing ever to happen to NDSU and got NDSU the most exposure ever, we drove out to spokane the next day and on XM Radio, it was literally brought up on every station on the hour and even talked about on the talk shows all day long. led off Sportscenter

Re: We are a basketball school!
If we get out of the first weekend ever... I'll believe you. Until then, we are just canon fodder. Nobody remembers a high seed unless they make a deep run a la George Mason.

Re: We are a basketball school!
I would say making the NCAA tournament brings a lot more attention than than winning 1 FCS championship. Winning 8 of 9 FCS championships though trumps a couple NCAA tournament appearances. Adding the win against Oklahoma helps but mostly for name recognition and not necessarily as a basketball school. The impact of a directional school (i.e. Western Michigan or Middle Tennessee) or name school (i.e. Davidson, Butler, Liberty, Belmont, Appalachian State) or city/region (Jacksonville State, Norfolk State, Denver) is different than a state university (i.e. Wyoming, New Mexico State, Delaware). Most people have heard of the state school examples, but they may not relate it to something. The awareness the other schools exist is heightened more by tournament appearances. The more you get the more you'll be remembered. There is probably a time impact for the basketball appearances as well. We probably aren't getting much from our 2014/15 appearances at this point, but they are brought up again when they qualify for the 4th.
None of this is absolute so all opinions have some validity. We are a unique case with the longevity of the FCS championships. Look at Mount Union. They are Division III but everyone knows about them because of the number of times they've been in the championship and won. Winona State and UMD I believe have both won D2 championships so people who follow D2 are familiar with them, but the general sports fan probably has no recollection of them winning a championship.

Re: We are a basketball school!
Not even close to being a BB school. Would be nice to get the BB program to be in the tourney every year and make a run every once in awhile. A sweet sixteen appearance would be awesome!

Or the team last year that I can not remember already.

Even if we get to the sweet 16, does that really leave a lasting legacy? Nearly every year there is 1 or 2 cinderella stories that make the sweet 16. What we've accomplished so far in basketball also happens every year, a 12 seed beats a 5 seed. Yah, it gets exposure that opening weekend, but doesn't leave a lasting legacy. Even a sweet 16 appearance, is that really going to leave a lasting legacy or be forgotten by the time the final four roles or around or by the end of the NCAA tournament ends? We are still a school that gets its recognition from the football program. Hell, I'd argue we are: 1. A football school (15 national championships, 2 Gameday appearances, 9-3 v FBS schools), 2. A track school (2 individual national championships), 3. A curling school (1 national championship), 4. A women's softball school (super regional appearance), 5. A basketball school (1 NCAA tournament win).

Ya man I mean NOBODY ever talked about NDSU beating K State and Iowa in football. It was never mentioned on any major news outlets. LMFAO.
You know what prevents NDSU from being a basketball school? Lack of fan support. I drove 5 hours last night across the state to watch the championship game. Not a single student in the student section. Not one.
It was the most pathetic showing at a significant NDSU sporting event I have ever witnessed. Omaha had far greater fan support. Granted it is a bit closer, but their student section was mostly full.

THE STUDENTS MADE SPRING BREAK PLANS AND ADULTS DIDNT PLAN ON GOING... BECAUSE WHY>???? BECAUSE WE WERE 13-15 vs D1 teams and staring at a boring coach.

Go there and win, that’s the ticket

Not once in all of my travels have I had a person come up to me and say anything about the NDSU-Oklahoma BB game. Never. Or anything BB related.
But I do regularly have conversations about the football team no matter where I go. Im in TX right now for a month and have numerous conversations about our football team since we got here March 1st.
On the trip down here did anyone mention the MBB team? Nope. Did any mention the FB team. Yep all the way down.

Re: We are a basketball school!
Not even sure why we're arguing about this. They're BOTH great exposure. Yeah, among basketball fans, this probably reaches more eyes. But seriously, here in Denver, more know about the football program. Just last week I was at the liquor store, and the guy working there said "So, did you guys win it all again this year?"
It may be just the hardcore FB fans, but also only the hardcore BB fans will remember a one-and-done thing.
Again, not sure which is more exposure, but what the hell, all are good...

Re: We are a basketball school!
When is the last time we beat a top 25 team in bb? We are gonna get a 15 seed at best and get smoked.

Re: We are a basketball school!
I'm picturing Trump inviting our basketball team to the White House because we made the NCAA tournament again.
That said, we are a football school and a decent basketball school. Kind of like Oklahoma or Ohio State - we will win a football national championship and occasionally a conference basketball championship.

Football school that makes the dance every few years
