UNA Post Game Thoughts
1) UNA deserves respect. They played tough and I look forward to seeing them in the playoffs in a few years.
2) Hard to really form an opinion on the passing game. So many of those plays were wide open from the all-out attempt to stop the run. That being said that TD run by Stick was beautiful.
3) I say it every week but i love watching Jabril Cox play football. He'll have a special place in Bison lore before it's over.
4) Welcome to Bison Nation, Trey Lance. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot more of Trey going forward. That TD run made me feel a little better about life without Stick.
5) Nothing against Brooks but don't we have about five options that are probably a better choice for a 3rd and goal run between the tackles? I'm glad this is the only thing i could find to complain about.
6) Bring on the Hens.

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
I’m completely satisfied with this win. First team defense was fantastic.
-
Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
offense cant be predictable with first down runs thatll get stuffed.
stick needs to shake off the rust, he'll be alright
jabril cox is a man
needed to win this game by 13 more points.

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
I think Trey Lance play more next year than Hotchkiss. He looks good.
-
Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
Can we just stop all pretending it isn't obvious who will start at QB next year.

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
1st team offense scored 17 points(yes I am giving the 1st TD to the una special teams miscue)
Their defense was fine, but not an elite type defense. It’s early, but plenty of work to be done with that offense.

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
Oh, it's Delaware next week....I was thinking it was SDSU. Thank goodness, guess I will watch the game after all.
-
Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
Good throws and bad throws from Stick. Staring down his receivers a few times, one should have been picked. I think he showed us enough to know he will be alright, but I do think the receivers need to help him out a bit.
Holy shit that D. Top to bottom. Outstanding.
-
Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
Too many of Sticks passes are right on the body or behind the receiver, makes it easy to defend against.

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
4th &1 on the 1, at home, up 2 scores, less than 1 minute left in the half, we get the ball to start the 2nd. We kick. WTF?

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
Yep, that was a head scratcher. He wasn't having much confidence in the O at that point.

Agreed. I will give Klieman a little credit though he was not happy at half. Next time step on the throat a little bit when you have the chance. And Brooks is not a goal line back if you are going to run between the tackles.

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
It seems to me, with Peterson kicking, our chances of scoring a TD from the 1 is as good as hitting a FG.

You think we're less than 50% at TD there? If that's true we've got problems.

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
I should have said the chances are better.

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
Kleiman obviously thinks NDSU scores there, he sent out the FG unit to get the offenses heads out of their collective asses.

Disagree. He kicked there because that is what he does. Just like almost every other coach, way to much kicking.

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
1) Defense was so awesome. That QB has brown stains in his pants.
2) First team offense was mediocre and sloppy. Receiver core looks very underwhelming.
3) Disappointing crowd. Lifeless and had no impact on the game whatsoever.
4) Fun to see Tre Lance. Cant judge much on 4 plays but that kid has some wheels.
-
Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
Is someone keeping tabs on this new 4 game red shirt situation on a dedicated thread I can’t find?
-
Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
Crowd was terrible, defense dominated, offense needs to get it together.
-
Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
My humble observations:
Two calls I didn't like. First, as others have said third and goal from the one use a power back. Second, why throw a pass when it is third and one from about the 40? Run the damn ball.
How did that fumble on the punt return get recovered by the Bison when I could swear at least two UNA jumped on it?
Credit to NAU, they competed and have some very good players. I am not convinced you can build a long-term quality team with JUCO transfers. time after time.
The Bison defense is good. The had the sack machine working today. Grimsley can tackle.
#42 is fast, very fast. #5 is fast, very fast. I wish we could have seen him play more than one series.

Kleiman was pissed in his interview. I think frustrations with the offense and his decision to kick was on emotion. If Kleiman wanted to, Bruce up the middle or a boot leg with Stick likely scores >75% of the time.
-
Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
I agree, I think he wanted to lay into the offense for making him have to kick at halftime.

Sure looked like they gave Bruce a try and he didn’t get in
Then gave Dunn a chance who also didn’t get in
Then gave Brooks a chance
I don’t think this will happen in more meaningful games.

I think Coach K got nervous about just getting the win, and wanted to lock in a 17-0 lead; although there's nothing sure about a FG either. I was surprised he didn't go for the TD.

NDSU beats UNA 100 times out of 100. There was never a point to be nervous about. He was sending a message

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
I thought the field goal was a no brainer. 3 score lead, defense playing lights out, we get the ball in the 2nd half, and if I remember correctly, not much time on the clock
-
Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
If we went for it on fourth And goal from the one and didn’t get it the chance our defense gets a safety the way they were playing is like 50% at that point.
-

I’m sure he was pissed with the offense. I just think that history strongly suggests he makes the decision to kick anyway.

Agree. Further, you don’t want to risk a fail on 4th and goal and let the underdog go to the locker starting to believe in the upset.

The clock is not an argument for settling for 3 in that situation it’s an argument for going for 6.

Two N AL guys did jump on it, but the replay camera angle showed clearly the ball was knocked beneath the player's hip upon which the Bison jumped on it. The N AL players simply knocked the ball away from themselves.
Agree that both 3 & 1 calls were poor. Running your smallest back up the middle when this has failed two times with the bigger guys makes no sense. For some reason, I was expecting the pass play even though it made little sense.

Time or not. A 3 score lead and the game is over with the way our defense was playing. 2 scores and they go into half time with hope. And you cant settle for points. You earn thm

The only thing that should matter in the decision is the math, and you can go for it, fail and have that failure result directly in 6 for the opponent at almost 5% rate there and you still only need to convert for 6 somewhere around 52-54% to come out ahead of kicking the FG, and that's saying the FG is a 100% lock.

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
Bad decision to go for the field goal, fire Klieman.

Re: UNA Post Game Thoughts
I think some of the offensive ineptitude can be the result of not wanting anything on tape for the wabbits in 2 weeks when the conference season starts. However that does not explain the piss poor execution of the plays that are called, the poor clock management, the turnovers and penalties. Got lots to clean up so I'll chalk it up to the bye week and hope for improvement next week. Tip o the cap to UNA they are gamers and will be making more noise this season.
