Relegation/Promotion CFB System (fantasy)
I was bored today at work so I cooked this up..
64 D1 teams. (power 5 plus Notre Dame, so 65 in year 1 only). 4 regions of 16.
64 D2 teams. (the group of 5 teams)
FCS teams (current FCS teams that stay in their same conferences)
Scheduling: 13 game seasons. 10 region games and 3 non region games(1 vs each of the other 3 regions). Divisions do not inter cross games, every game must be in your same division.
D1:
8 team playoff in D1. The 4 region winners and then 4 wild cards regardless of division but no more than 3 can go to playoffs from the same region.
Relegation: Bottom team in each D1 region plus 4 other worst records regardless of region play in 8 "relegation bowls". Losers of these bowls are relegated to D2.
D2:
4 Region winners and 4 wild cards regardless of division go to play in the 4 "promotion bowls". The winners of these bowl games are promoted to D1.
Relegation: Bottom team in each D2 region plus the 4 other worst records regardless of region play in 8 "D2 Relegation Bowls". Losers of these bowl games are relegated to D2.
FCS:
The 4 FCS playoff semifinalists are promoted to D2.
Regions will have to shift slightly from season to season based on the geography of the teams who are relegated and promoted each year.

ok so the D2 Central is shifting more north than south so that's why they sent so many teams to the south and gained more midwestern teams. D2 realignment was a bit difficult
Re: Relegation/Promotion CFB System (fantasy)
Aren't you going to have 65 in D2 next season?

No I relegated 5. I had to adjust that. UMASS was automatically relegated and Kent State was added to the relegation bowls

So what does the FCS look like year 2?

That makes it hard. In this system football would be separate from other sports conferences. The teams relegated from D2 would just join the geographical FCS fit. In this scenario, Texas State would be Southland, UMASS back to the CAA, Fresno State to the Big Sky and Buffalo maybe to the MVC to replace NDSU

That's only 4 teams but I get it. Similar to the other tiers you adjust from year to year by geography to keep the leagues somewhat balanced.
Re: Relegation/Promotion CFB System (fantasy)
Yeah exactly. I got a lot of this from how the English soccer pyramid does it. Once they get down to the 6th level (Premier to level 5 it's just 1 league per level) and lower they have parallel leagues based on geography that always have to shuffle.
Kent State was the 5th team relegated. I accounting for that in the 2017 realignment, I just forgot to put it in the 2016 review.
