I don't think VNL even has to. Anyone who is entertaining and has some entry-level web skills can set up an awesome site with an attached podcast.
This is a huge (but predictable) mistake. There's a huge market for this kind of content and the community will fill the void.

Especially since they have to provide content for a broadcast television station too. Dom isn't a newspaper writer, he's a TV sports director. They're going to have to keep some of that free.

That is a lot of work for someone to do out of the goodness of their heart. Any idea how many page views it takes to make a dollar online? Any thoughts on how you would secure sponsorships with virtually no viewership?
