1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
I think this is going to be very interesting. Right now 1660 is basically just a Fox Sports channel and it hardly shows up on the ratings but it has some big money potential.
Curious to what it's going to be like. I heard it will air other Bison Sports. Game replays. Games. Coaches shows. Stuff like that.
Personally I don't like channels that air syndicated crap around the clock. I love having a place to listen to press conferences and coaches shows. The other sports need some coverage as well.
But I think the key is mixing it up and having a daily local talk show. Having some personalities is key. Syndicated national sucks. Not only Bison talk though because it really limits what you can do. I think it would be smart mixing in some Vikings, Packers, Twins, Wild, Wolves, and all the Summit and MVFC teams. Heck high school sports would get some listeners. Let's face it well run out of Bison stuff for most of the summer and ratings will go in the shitter. (Kind of like Bisonville off season )
I think it would be cool having someone like Phil Hanson and Jeremy Jorgensen having a once a week show focused on sports in general. How about someone interesting like Drago?
It gets me thinking, what do I like to listen to? My favorite shows (in no particular order and I like bits of each) are Izzo and Kolpack. It's just really entertaining and it's not always Bison talk. I like Jack Michaels show. (Not a great interviewer but i like the flow of the show) I like the show with Derek Hanson too. And yes, McFeely is right up there too. He does a great job getting the listeners involved. Hallstrom does a great job in the slow summer months and has totally unique guests, like thr announcer for Georgia Southern talking about the move to FBS. That's the type of stuff I personally find entertaining.
Any ideas what you would like to hear? Thoughts

Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
Derek Hanson would be a good get. Not sure if they'd be able to steal any other guys away but Dom would be awesome. Itll be interesting. When is it supposed to be switched over?

I wasn't really talking about "stealing guys" but more so the type of sports shows I like listening to. Dom and Derek are on the list. Dom is the sports director so we could never pay him enough I'd rather find our own guys personally... plenty of interesting/entertaining people out there

Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
Mr. Burgundy from Bisonville, paper him up and get a live stream going for those not in listening range.
-
Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
Just as long as we dont have to listen to the "Power Trip" morning show from the cities. My god those guys are terrible. Would be nice to get Mike and Mike.
-
Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
Personally I think the more local info, the better. I can go anywhere and hear about NFL thoughts, or nearly anywhere for regional Vikings thoughts. Spend most of my time on the minutia of Bisonville because it is the only place to get round the clock bison.
In the book "Made to Stick" a story is told about a small town newspaper editor with a wildly successful paper. Did it by keeping the news extremely local. Said he could make money printing the phone book because people would buy it just to see their name in print.
Anyone else on here get the Litchville (ND) Bulletin?

Lots of knowledgeable folks. I like Neis, Ross and Ryan Burns. Podcast replays could be interesting
What about the FCS Wedge show?

Really? They are the #1 morning show in Minneapolis, I think they all mesh well together. Sure, there is some stupid fart joke humor, they put out a quality show most of the time. It's certainly an upgrade over Star's show...

Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
I'm glad I have a life beyond sports. I could care less about this radio stuff.

No kidding morning shows like that are a complete bit. I get their humor/jokes may rub people wrong. The variety they do keeps you entertained never really know what they might come up with one day. I didn't mind Star's show much either, have to say he really gave the legs to what they have now days though.

I don't mind the power trip at all. Then again I'm also a Vikes, Twins, Wolves, and Wild fan.

You've got to be joking. I quit listening after Star got the boot. It's beyond childish at this point. Most of KFAN's shit has gotten old.

God forbid you listen to the radio on the way to and from work, right? Your life must be extra serious.

That came off wrong, I didn't mind Star's show, I just think this group is better. Obviously, the pieces were in place and I sort of questioned the decision when they let him go. They've got their own thing now and it works. I love initials on Friday morning on the way to work, makes me forget that I'm going to work.

Not for 13 years I haven't.

This is interesting. I saw on Twitter that the next "Voice Of The Bison" will also be the program director at our new radio station. I'm liking it already.

Same here start at 8:00 so I don't get to hear them unless they change the time, or they talk about it the following week.
Crazy that the reason I stumbled upon the show 12-13 years ago was tuning into PA and Dubay would hear stars sign off on his true superstar segment and that was what got me listening. Loved how sludge (Cory) and Hawkey would "railroad" him into doing eating contests (obviously they had the bits preplanned) that he did by saying no don't do it, you have your health to worry about, like begging him not to do it. But he'd do it anyway.
I like what it has morphed into with Sauce being their whipping boy now sort of like star was with his eating contests.
Hawkey sounds like a great guy to hang out with, he must just have a ton of stories. I don't know how he can do his band and then have to wake up at 2:30 be to work by 3:30ish etc, and he does producing for Vikings games too. Guess its all that red bull or whatever he drinks!

I used to be an avid Lex and Terry listener when I drove for my job, then would turn it to KFAN when PA & Dubay started. I very quickly tired of the recycled stuff on L&T and ended up doing about like what you did. Would catch bits and pieces of Star if I was out of town and couldn't get L&T. Pretty soon it was just my routine to listen to them. They seem to love their jobs and it shows in their style...and quite frankly, rubs off on my mood in the morning.
I used to be a really big Common Man fan as well, but I just don't listen as much now that I'm at my desk. Bump is easily my favorite show/host followed by Power Trip.

Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
Bump is by far the best radio show in a 5 state radius. Probably one of the more interesting characters also in a 5state radius too. Love him

Agreed. He's so versatile, plus his rapport with guests is off the charts. Him and JG have great synergy too, which really adds to the show. I'm not sure how he hasn't gotten a gig someplace bigger.

Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
I think we will see radio daily talk coverage drop a bit, have to admit kfgo did good for all the talk NDSU got through an average week

Once in awhile he catches lightening in a bottle with an interview. I remember him having a lady on that was liberated from a concentration camp and ended up marrying an American soldier. It is that type of interview that comes out of the blue and is very memorable. Of course "Mace in your face" is very entertaining, too.
I think it was the second time that we played the Gophers that Dark stated that the Bison had no chance and he would walk to Fargo if the Bison beat them. Don't think he ever made good on that.

I always liked PA and Dubay. Common Man got old fast. Back in the old days I liked David Moulton and Derek Hansons show.

Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
So let's change this discussion a bit. If truely branded as bison 1660, is the "bison brand" big enough to support and sustain?
At one point I thought yes. Have year round bison football coverage, add in the "other" bison sports stories, a mens bb run to the NCAA, womens softball good victories and you could make a business model of it.
But looking at a spin off of it, herds and horns, that is what they have tried to have capture. A bison theme. I don't think it has worked well. Aside from bad location, no daytime parking and well you don't need to go any further, people don't go there just because it is a bison theme bar. So I don't know if all bison all the time, will work on the radio. Drago does okay with the Bison illustrated, but I have different reasons why I think that goes okay.
Also, some chatter about fees related to cost of team makers and football tickets. Oil and ag money has dried up. Opportunity to get some seats might exist.

bar/restaurant is totally different than sports talk radio, no 1660 does not need to be all NDSU, but having good programming with people who don't talk to hear themselves talk and are knowledgeable would go...Fargo is a sports town it will work if they do it right

Has nothing to do with being a restuarant. The Herds and horns site failed as food/coffee/bar site multiple times. They are trying to sell bison brand. That is what I want to discuss in regards to the radio. If you brand it "bison 1660" it will be bison based.
Thus my question. Is the bison brand big enough to support a business. I don't think at Herd's and horn as a bar/restuarant with a bison theme works. Can a radio station work? IDK
Longhorn Network and Big ten Network works. Can a bison radio network work?

I get it, but radio is different they don't need to be 100 percent bison

I lived in Arkansas for several years and the sports radio station there was set up as essentially the Hogs channel. They switched over to one of the national feeds for late night, but the rest of the day it was local hosts. Pretty much all the coverage revolved around University of Arkansas athletics, and high school sports when things got slow. I want to say it was local hosts and athletic events from about 8am to midnight.
It is doable to have a dedicated Bison station, but it takes a lot of staff. Not sure Radio FM would be willing to spend that much to get it going.

Did they still have Razorback Roundup?

Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
Who the hell wants to listen to Bison 24/7?
-
Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
It won't be an all Bison talk station, there isn't enough to talk about all day to keep the demographic that they are going after interested. Compare it to the rebrand of Big 98.7, same ownership group going after competition across the street. They think having more Bison talk can take away ratings from KFGO and The Fan. Realistically, it's hard to see the ownership group having no more then 3 full timers working on the station. I bet they do a 2 to 3 hour local show primarily consisting of Bison talk and they utilize people like Jeremy Jorgenson and all of the coaches from NDSU. Probably similar to P.A with all of his Viking and Wild talk.
-
Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
Press conferences, weekly coaches shows, Bison feedback, 3-4 hours a day of talk, 3-4 hours of games or replays, 3-4 hours of caller driven discussion, maybe have an AD show with Matt. Add in local news and weather cut ins and I see plenty of choices to fill the time, question is if people stay tuned in enough to sell advertisers. I think KFGO had a lot of success with Bison talk, I see Bison 1660 being a success as well.

That would certainly make Jack Michaels a pretty solid candidate. His radio show has some pretty decent ratings
Glad it won't be ALL Bison but obviously a TON of stuff would be awesome. I think it'd fair to say MOST Bison fans are also fans of the Vikes/Packers, Twins, Wolves, and Wild. For obvious reasons we need a focus around those teams too. Let's face it the average Joe when football/basketball season is done would rather talk regional pro sports than NDSU baseball or softball. It's just reality. Doesn't mean we can't cover them but if the core demographic is the 100 people who attend softball games, it's going to get killed in ratings.
I am happy to have a go to station for weekly press conferences and other sports.
Should be interesting cross promoting. Ingstad knows his stuff and NDSU has great visibility. Heck could advertise the radio station on state wide tv and on Midco. Not to mention on the Web , bison radio network, and on the new giant video boards. Were just all over

Speak for yourself....I don't care two farts about MN pro sports. If I did, well there are already plenty of formats to get that information. Adding one more in the mix does nothing. What shocks me is how many of you think NDSU is all sports and nothing but sports. There is a lot of BIG things happen at NDSU that do not involve sports. Things that impact the local and regional economy, extension etc!!!!!! If done right you use sports (the front porch) to bring people to the Bison and the format to educate and BUILD THE UNIVERSITY'S BRAND.
For Bleep sake people WTFU!
-
Re: 1660am rebranding to "The Bison."
Yea well you're not the majority so nobody cares what you give a fart about
And good luck with your all NDSU station not involving sports. That would be terrible radio
