Because higher viewership = higher exposure and brand awareness. Higher exposure means better quality recruits and can even help with donations and enrollment numbers.
Statewide ratings are huge. There is a reason KVLY paid us 1.2 million dollars to air our games. They wouldnt do it if nobody watched

With the MAC and the MWC they don't make too much sense either for transportation alone. Every one of those road games would be plane trips and probably for every single sport as I would assume we would try to move the entire athletic department into those leagues if possible.
I know UND had plenty of other issues when they had to cut sports back a few years ago, but I think the biggest issue was when they joined the Big Sky. Every road game was a plane trip. Those add up big time when you are sending your teams to Arizona and the West Coast many times throughout the year. It would be interesting to see how successful (both athletically and financially) NDSU would have been if we would have been allowed into the Big Sky when we jumped up to D1.
My preference is the MAC with UNI and ISUr

And please, have an answer to the often-cited "location" argument. Here's the answer. We do have a following. We have a market that is devoted to the school that includes our entire state and a ton of interest in MN. UIC is in Chicago. They bring zero eyeballs to the Horizon League because no one cares about UIC. Better to have high interest in midsize market than no interest in a large one. And, with an airport right here, it is easier to get here than to most other college towns, unless you're talking about a bus league (which the Mountain West is not). Location, as an argument for not inviting us to a conference, is easily rebutted. Just make the effort.
And my vision for the future is to win another 7 natties. Sure beats some worthless bowl game no one ever heard of.

No reason to think we would have to settle only for bowls we never heard of.

Troy gets less exposure than we do. Here is a previous post.
Wyoming can get some really good numbers if they get to the MW championship game, a bowl game, and get some games with power 5 schools. But most of the games on ESPN have pretty weak rating. They don't even list CBS Sports Network because it's on the bottom of the pecking order. The best Wyoming team in 2016 had 5.25 million but we are pretty routinely in the 2-4 million range. And our statewide NBC has some pretty crazy ratings and covers a huge area with 100% availability and when you throw in the lakes, eastern montana, northern south dakota, and now expanded kook tv.. its a shit ton of people
