Someone should tell him that you are typically expected to play in order to be an effective marketing tool.

I don't believe capitalism comes with an "Enough" or "Max" limiter switch.

Re: NDSU players getting Paid
I am probably in the minority of this is not a good deal in the big picture. Most student athletes are on some type of scholarship already. While the regular student studying to is paying their way through school. Yes, there are academic scholarships available to them as well based on need, grades or whatever. College student athletics in major markets with pro sports in them may not see the benefits of this rule change. Would you rather have Russell Wilson or starting QB from U of W as a marketing tool? Yes there will be plenty of smaller business and social media business that will probably snatch up college athletes. Who will be looking at these contract for the student athletes so they are not being taken advantage of. YES YES YES I heard it before, the NCAA is taking advantage of them now. Also do you not think the university that are the "haves" could possibly get more of the top athletes just based on marketing potential than the "have not" markets? I guess time will tell on this. As for the student athletes go make bank while you can. We live in a free market country, go get paid.

Making money from your own image and likeness is your own doing. You earn that. It isnt necessarily given, so not really the same as getting free tuition, board, COA.

Re: NDSU players getting Paid
Really serendipitous that EA Sports was ahead of this news getting college football back.

Literally anyone other than a college athlete could do this before. Academic scholarship (and not a collegiate athlete):
No issue. Make as much money as you want off your self marketing or working for others. No limit to your income potential while attending college.
Prior to this if you were an NCAA athlete (scholarship or not):
You're an amateur. You get enough money. Be happy that you get your education for free.

Why would I go through Phoenix when Peyton Sewall has more followers?

College tuition has been drastically inflated and does not reflect the real value. Turn everything back to d3 and make an amateur league If you don't like it. Colleges did this to themselves by making it a billion dollar industry. The ncaa is horseshit as an institution.

You need to read up on some SMU and Miami history if you think kids in major markets won't get paid.....

Commie... :)
I wonder if the push won't be to get the athletes to unionize. That is actually the saving grace for the NFL.

Re: NDSU players getting Paid
What is the earning potential for someone at NDSU? I don't see it as that large. Based on NDSU media contract, I don't see it trickling down to an individual athlete as that lucrative. Is a car dealer going to pay a player $10k to be on a billboard or tv ad? I just don't see it. Not many kids or gamers are able to monetarize their followers.
Big schools, big marketplace, different story.

Kab1one if i was a car dealer or any business in Fargo. hell yea I'd give a player $5000 to bring in fans
ps NDSU marketing shouldve had FORMER PLAYER JERSEYS ready this morning, what a failure!
Imagine the amount of Carson Wentz/Trey Lance jerseys would sell!

That name means nothing to anyone and I have no idea what pedigree is attached to it.

Anyone who think Texas will continue to be irrelevant in football after this is not paying attention.......

Re: NDSU players getting Paid
I'm assuming all students who pay the wellness fee will be able to utilize the new IPF? Get training advice from coach Kramer? Get food at that little juice bar thing? Put in orders for free Nike clothing and shoes?
Yep, there was definitely no benefit before to being a scholarship athlete. To be honest, the athletes not being able to have a part-time job, accept meals/tattoos/etc. was pretty bullshit. But what I've hated was the disingenuous argument that there were no benefits to the scholarship athletes. The "free" college education, housing, FCoA and the name recognition are some pretty big incentives/benefits.
Something needed to happen with the outrageous money that flows through college sports, I'm just really worried about the law of unintended consequences.

If it was so lucrative why don't ex players in town leverage the bison past and make money from it? Drago has a media company. But other than that no one does. Carson's deal is the exception since he has his own marketing group.

Welcome to the real world (well, 50% of Americans), new taxpayers. Goodbye California star collegiate athletes. Great day for Florida and Texas.

Secondary thought people aren't considering. Now students can write a book and sell it. Play in a band and charge a cover. Compete as an olympian and play college sports. These examples were all taken from Beth's twitter of ncaa athletes bared from competing because of "violations".

This is a good question, by why do you say former players? Can universities now sell team jerseys with active players names or numbers and give each player their respective cut. This would be a huge opportunity for FCS athletes at schools with a good fan base. I think NDSU could have always sold jerseys with former players names though, couldn't they? UND has been selling jirts with former players names and numbers on them for years (nhl guys). Does NDSU not sell even a Wentz jirt?

How do you tell who gets what though? #1 is Bentrim or MW? #16 is Brock or RJ...

Re: NDSU players getting Paid
Perhaps NDSU could yank their HOF eligibility if a current or former athlete profited from sales of Bison jerseys that displayed their name on the back.
-
Re: NDSU players getting Paid
These kids need to set up Cameo accounts stat!
Also how many schools will have their kids sign up for these and tell their deep pocket donors to make sure to "buy" a cameo for $1k for every event in their lives. Some of these athletes at big schools could make 6 figures a year just doing that, seriously.
-
Re: NDSU players getting Paid
This is going to be really interesting to see how much opportunity there is at normal FCS schools and then at NDSU.
I heard someone mention the purpose of the NCAA was to stop this sort of thing from happening and now that the door has been kicked down, maybe the schools should just disolve the NCAA? Also, since athletes are now apparently employees and not students, I don't see the need for Title IX enforcement for equal opportunities for the student body either. After all, how many of these athletes were planning on attending NDSU and decided, "hey, I think I'll try out for the basketball team". I don't think that's how it works.
It's a new day indeed.

One of these things is the definition of capitalism, the other the definition of communism.
Ironically the one on the bottom is the capitalist, with the NCAA and its member universities serving as a cartel that suppessed the wages of the workers (the players)

Re: NDSU players getting Paid
I'm guessing the IRS will have a small amount of interest in the form of payment and if it's being reported.....
