What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
Not to intrude on the love fest over on the season prediction thread, but now that most everyone thinks we are going to win almost everything I am getting nervous (but not quite in football season form). Where do people think we are potentially vulnerable or weak?

Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
Great post...special teams is the glaring obvious first issue. Particulary the kicking game.

Injuries - too many of them. Thankfully, we have depth.

Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
Well, DeLuca and Plank are gone from MLB... Marlette looked very good before getting injured. Hopefully he gets back to 100%. If not, that's a potential weakness.
WRs and punt team are potential weaknesses.

Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
1. Special Teams---Bison have been very good but last year not many games they won this aspect of the game
2. LB Depth--i THINK this is questionable after Cox, Jordheim, Marlette as potential starters---top bu's Beau Pauly, Jackson Hankey, & Jack Begley??
3. QB BU--kinda scary bu are RFR--IFFFF something happens to Stick (does this mean less runs planned for Stick this year)
4. Trying to go UNDEFEATED---15-0 this year!? I predicted 15-0 last year damn Bunnies
GO BISON

Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
1. Special teams - biggest improvement needed
2. Wide receivers - who steps up to replace RJ and help Shep out
3. #2 QB - hopefully we won't need one
That's about it IMO.

Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
Tanguay is gone after anchoring the defense for 7 years. That’s a loss that needs to be considered.
-
Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
Wide receiver is a question mark. Agree about the special teams too.

I think he's saying just one weakness (backup QB), as both are Redshirt Freshmen and both are untested.

I read it wrong. You're right.

That's where the new rule could be huge. You can test one of the true freshmen if needed.

Good point.

Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
Replacing Tre Dempsey at safety, it can't be overstated how important he was to the secondary and his leadership back there.

All sections but 21 suck. In general Bison fans are spoiled rotten.

Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
And the winners are....special teams and clock management. Let's hope these were high on Klieman's list of to-do's.

Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
Linebacker - middle linebacker and overall experience. Jabril is the man. Jordheim is set for a stud season. Mercadel I think has some big time upside. The middle I'm concerned about with Marlette coming off a knee injury. He could be slowed for the first month or so. Dont know enough about Beau Pauley and Hankey. Really hope Jack Begley has made some strides because physically hes a heck of an athlete and probably has the best athletic ability in coverage like DeLuca did. I wonder if Jabril could do the Carlton Littlejohn thing and slide to the middle on nickel downs and took Grant Olson out since he wasnt great in coverage?
Backup QB. That scares me every year.

Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
Middle of the defense. When NDSU lost to JMU in the semis in 2016 one of the reasons given for the loss was that Tanquay, DeLuca, and Dempsey were all injured and not on the field. They’ve all graduated. That’s a hell of a lot of talent and experience to replace.
-
Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
Special teams, already mentioned a lot... but specifically, punt returns (can we get more yardage and fewer fair catches) and punting ball placement (where our kicks go on the field). These seem like opportunities in that they weren't strengths for us last year. Anyone emerge during spring sessions in either of those areas?

Fyi Dempsey played in that game. Can't remember if he was playing with a bad injury.

If he was I’m sure it’s not worth mentioning as an excuse.

I dont know if middle of the defense is referring to free safety though... more strong safety, middle linebacker, and DTs. I think we are good everywhere if Marlette comes back strong and fast or if the young mike backers can play at a high level, or if Jabril can slide to the middle in passing downs. I like our DTs and safeties. The same couldnt br said about the depth when we lost to JMU
Although we dont seen to play our safeties in a traditional way but Grimsley is a stud.

Gee geaux sioux, I see you posted on Bisonville twice today and NOBODY has posted on the SS football page in 18 hours . Shouldn't there be more interest in un_ football considering your camp just ended and you should have a whole bunch of D2 and D3 quality commits coming in? I see lots of bitching on the thread about the Englestads. Looks like kennedy sold you down the river again when it comes to giving away the revenue. But we thank you for your interest in NDSU football.

A monsoon of injuries can happen and it’s out of our control. Lack of depth is in our control though.....

How? Are you holding a gun to the heads talented recruits? Until your school drops hockey, it's going to be tough to support football like it needs to be in order to be great at the FCS level.

So, if I understand you it is never going to happen.

Yes. Outside B10 schools and Notre Dame, is there any DI school that is great at both sports?
There’s a reason why hockey isn’t at NDSU.

Re: What are the potential weaknesses of the 2018 team?
The defense did an excellent job at tackling last season. Whatever they did for training, they need to keep it up.

At this point, entropy. That's it.
