2017-2018 Depth Chart
Although I know we are in the middle of a football season that's been going wonderfully (minus the injuries), we are less than a month away from the exhibition game and just over a month away from the NDSU Basketball season opener. My question for all who have much more inside knowledge than myself is how this depth chart and rotation might look this year. Here's what I've somewhat gathered just from everything I've read about the guys coming in and our returning players:
PG - Hunter/Van Dulm
SG - P Miller/Samuelson
SF - Ward/Quayle
PF - AJ/Geu
C - D Miller/Eliason
Including Quayle is more of just a 2 deep thing as I actually think Geu will backup both AJ & Tyson and that's also under the assumption all of the true freshman redshirt. My main question is if anybody has seen these guys practice and if a guy like Eady is going to be playing over one of the transfers or if a guy like Kreuser is going to play this year to give us an extra big in the rotation. It's not too often you see JC guys come in and redshirt and with Tyson able to play the 2 and Geu able to play the 3 & 4 we have pretty solid rotations in the 2-4 spots. I'm just curious how a few of these guys are going to fit in. I think if we wanted our best 5 players on the floor it'd be Miller, Ward, Geu, AJ, Miller but I don't think we want to waste Paul's energy bringing the ball up the court. Thoughts/comments?

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
P. Miller will play a fair amount of PG I bet. I’d love to see a guy like Rocky be able to come in and bang down low as a true freshman. Hopefully we will see a lot of that!
-
Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
We need strong play inside now since Dex is gone. Dylan or Spencer toughen up this off season? Excited for hoops. We shit the bed last half of last year , not doing it this year. We are going dancing.

Isn't Rocky on a 4 for 5 type scholarship deal? I'd think that would mean he redshirts this year.
I agree that their best lineup is with Paul Miller at PG. Slide Ward and AJ up a spot and put Geu in at PF. I'm really hoping Geu or Dylan Miller step their games up. Without that the loss of Dex in the post is going to be a killer.

I certainly hope Hunter, Miller, AJ, Geu and Miller are there to start, with Ward as the 6th man. AJ isn't a 4, and Geu needs that role.

Tyson Ward off the bench? This is ludicrous and it better not happen!

Geu isn't any more of a 4 than AJ is, the only true 4 we really have on this team will be Rocky but he is on a 4 for 5 deal so that likely means he will indeed redshirt this season.
Tyson off the bench is ludicrous indeed, other than Paul he's the best player on this team. I think it's between Hunter and Geu for the 5th starting spot, just depends how the coaching staff handles the PG situation.

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Don't be surprised if Paul Miller brings the ball up the court often and handles that pressure. Need Deng Geu to take the next step this season. Needs to be productive and on the court a lot. Not to sure on the freshman and if any will have a role this season. I think Rocky would be most likely to see the court of the group.
Looking forward to the season, and how this group comes together.

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Stinks Ky is gone really hurts ball handling I am not that pumped for this Eason like I was in the past
-
Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
No Dex is going to hurt A LOT but the absence of Carlin Dupree is going to be just as noticeable IMO. I think you need to constantly rotate the little guys in like Hunter and Samuelson, there is zero quickness on the court otherwise...
-
Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Do we really need a point when we pass the ball around the 3 point line and throw up a desperation shot at the end????
The question is who is going to get to the rim and who is going to defend the rim.
Tyson needs to step up as I believe he has the most potential on the team.
That still doesn't leave us a post defender.
-
Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Do we have an offense other than the "weave"? Yes I know some will say it is effective and some will say boring. But if you do not have enough slashers going to the rim to contact of get the layup the weave ends up with a heaved up 3 at the end of the shot clock. The old Colorado shuffle I ran back in high school is better than the weave. Need to knock down 82% of team freethrows this year.

Geu needs to start and begin to carry this team. What are people advocating putting him on the bench again and playing 5 minutes a game. AJ at the 4 is what is ludicrous. AJ, Paul and Ward should be a 3 person rotation at the 2 & 3. Hunter and Van at the 1. Geu, Miller and Eli covering the 4-5. AJ at the 4 puts 4 players on the perimeter and gives this team no physical presence.

Disagree with the bolded part. That's basically forcing at least one of your 3 best returning players to be on the bench at all times. Like someone said earlier with NDSU's "offense" you don't need an elite passer at PG... in fact it's more valuable to have a PG that can shoot and create off the dribble for himself. That pretty much defines Paul Miller to a tee so I think he'd fit fine as the PG and primary ball handler this year. Hunter would be a good guy to bring in against teams that press to have that extra ball handler.

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Can Miller play D against the other PGs in the Summit?

Paul is a very good defensive player. IMO

I also think he's a solid defender but my biggest issue with Paul playing PG would be fatigue. A lot of teams we play pressure the ball all the way up the court which requires additional energy to bring up and then also have to guard some of the quickest guys on opposing teams every possession can really wear a guy out who needs to have legs at the end of games to score in the clutch. Khy was a machine, how he played that many minutes at the pace he did was insane, I don't know if Paul is most effective for our team doing that. I think Cam will start and Geu will be the 6th man, I actually like the idea of Geu coming off the bench as he can provide a spark and can provide a nice rotation in the 3/4 spots to get our starters rest one guy at a time.

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Have AJ bring the ball up... He did nothing last year.
-
Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Cam Hunter & Tyson Ward & Paul Miller need to run this team.. Period.
Dylan Miller just needs to board & throw some weight around.
AJ better do something.
Ty Eady should NOT redshirt... we need some athleticism somewhere!
everything else is question marks.

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Will be interesting to see if any of the freshman (Eady, Mertens, Kreuser and Meidinger) redshirt at all. From a physical stand point it sure looks like Eady and Kreuser could play right away. But we do have Dulm and Quayle that came in as transfers to compete with Samuelson and Hunter for minutes as well.
Any inside report from practice or anything. Only 3 weeks out.

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
I will say Richman starts
PG Cameron Hunter
SG Paul Miller
SF Tyson Ward
PF Aj Jacobson
C Dylan Miller
I'd start
PG Paul Miller
SG Tyson Ward
SF Aj Jacobson
PF Deng Geu
C Dylan Miller
I will also predict that all freshmen redshirt EXCEPT Tyrell Eady

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
You really think theres room for Eady? He would have to be really special to not RS

I agree with you. I am not sure there is enough minutes for him this year. I have not seen him play in person but he looks the part of a physical guard we need.
I would like to see someone other than Paul Miller handle the ball all the time. Save some of his energy.

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Wish Deng Geu could have put on some more weight. He's kind of lanky for a 4. His size now he looks like a 3

His skill set is built more as a 3 anyway, he looked a little thicker than he did last year that's for sure but not by a whole lot. I'm thinking he may have the same issue Trayvonn had where he just can't put on weight, worked out okay for him, we'll see how it goes for Geu. The other bonus is next year Rocky should start at the 4 and Geu will get to play the 3 anyway but yeah he'll probably spend a fair amount of time at the 4 this season.
I'm also not sold on Eady not redshirting, he looks the part, he looks like a strong physical 2/3 guy like Kory Brown which I would be thrilled with if he turns out to be but I just don't see the minutes this year so I feel like it would be a waste.

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
According to this week's game notes press release by NDSU. Saturday will be the final home game for both seniors AJ Jacobson and Paul Miller. As well as Junior Spencer Eliason. Spencer will enroll in medical school next fall and forgoing his final year of eligibility.

Wow on Spencer. Good more him. For a guy that is done at the end of the season, he sure is playing hard to finish his career up. Paging Dr. Eliason stat code blue in room 236.

Definitely a bummer to lose him as his game has been improving but can't fault a guy for going to medical school, happy for him. Maybe this can provide a little extra boost to finish the season on a high note!

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
This will really hurt our big man depth. Looks like the redshirt from Dickinson is a few years away and we don't have any bigs coming in for this recruiting class.
-
Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Is any more recruiting left? We signed 3 of them already. Next year may be not good for bison after lose 3 of them.
Jarius Cook
Jaxon Knotek
Vinnie Shahid

Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Well at least Dylan Miller has one more year
-
Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
So not only do we suck in the frontcourt, we may have only Kreuser next year, and would assume someone would be brought in. Does Dylan Miller transfer?
-
Re: 2017-2018 Depth Chart
Probably going to need a JUCO big for some depth.

NDSU would be 24-5 if they listened to me
Cam
Eady
Miller
Ward
Krueser/Geu
that would be an amazing athletic team!

This is what I would suggest. If Dylan Miller is healthy and can contribute we should be okay as Meidinger could contribute spot minutes as needed assuming he's ready to go at the beginning of the year from knee surgery but this will give us an extra scholarship so wouldn't hurt to bring in a body.

Whoever is on the team next year needs to have chemistry with the others. Successful teams have good team instincts. When you watch them they anticipate each other's next moves. Maybe next year the pot will be sufficiently stirred.

I get it that you are disappointed in the season, but dogging on individual players is a douche bag move. Whether or not they live up to your expectation of success, they've busted their ass to get to this point and shouldn't need to be subjected to bullshit comments such as this.
We should all be better than this.
