Is this really a "new arena?" Or just a facelift on an old building? It could use it. Right now, it is just a basic functional building and not very up-to-date.
The arena is actually a bit small and outdated for its usage, particularly for NCAA basketball, but it has some special deal with the NCAA. I think it has hosted more NCAA tournament games than any other venue. This may be part of the reason they are pouring serious money into it.
Sioux Falls has been aggressively pursuing the First Four. Upgrading the arena could be a reaction to that (among other factors, obviously). Supposedly the last time the First Four was bid, it was very close. Maybe Dayton gave assurances there would be facility improvements.
$72 million of renovations in a 12 month period is a monumental task.
I'm moving to Dayton this summer. I was really surprised at how nice it was. Never did more than drive through on the highway.
Dayton's monopoly on the First Four couldn't last forever. It is fun to think that Sioux [Falls] may have been putting pressure on them. Although I don't recall hearing about it, I could see Des Moines making a push also, now that they have established themselves as a legit NCAA First and Second round location.
You wouldn't have heard anything about Sioux City pressuring Dayton, because Sioux Falls and Sioux City aren't actually the same city...

"Sioux Falls has hosted six NCAA championship events since 2015 at the Premier Center and Sanford Pentagon, new facilities backed by aggressive corporate support that turned a minor-league city into a major player. The Pentagon will be the site of the Division II men’s basketball Elite Eight in March, as it was for the women last year."
"With experience on its side, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority has put in 21 bids for championship events from 2019-22 in basketball, wrestling, track and field and volleyball."
"Sioux Falls made a serious push in 2014, bidding to host future early-round action or “First Four” games at the 12,000-seat Premier Center, which opened that same year. The early-round bids went elsewhere and Dayton, Ohio, was chosen to remain as the site of the First Four."
Here's a list of what Sioux Falls has bid on:

And what they won in recent announcements from the NCAA:

At 2:00 of the video idea for fargodome corners!
Dayton and Cincinnati are basically connected with a population of over 3 million. This combined with 2 major airports, SF wouldn't be able to compete.
Gawd you are butthurt. Here's a further explanation since you seem to have a problem understanding basic english words.
Dayton won the most recent round of bidding, and was awarded the right to host the First Four.
Sioux Falls competed for the right to host the First Four, submitting a bid that came very close to winning according to media accounts. Sioux Falls has hosted multiple NCAA sanctioned events across multiple divisions and multiple sports, so this is not farfetched at all.
Fargo did not compete to host the First Four. Fargo did not submit a bid to host the First Four or any other NCAA sanctioned event that I'm aware of. Fargo is not on the NCAA radar for hosting any NCAA basketball games. I heard the Fargodome was hosting a hunting show that weekend.
Does that provide some clarity?
Actually, I'm just trying to realtalk. Having actually moved out of the upper midwest bubble, I realize how isolated and small it really is. I love Fargo (I could take or leave Sioux Falls) but it costs nearly twice as much to fly into either as it does somewhere people actually live.
There are practical matters, and airports with more than 5 gates, at play here. SF is as much of a remote outpost as Fargo to anywhere outside of the bubble.
Sioux Falls, way overrated. Sioux City, way underrated. Sioux City needs to get its head out of its butt on a lot of things but they have been hosting NAIA National Championships for decades now. So they do have some pull. Yeah, I know, NCAA > NAIA. A convention is a convention, it means dollars spent in town.
Anyways, doesn't matter. But to keep it local, Fargo > Sioux Falls, this is coming from a South Dakotan. Many of us don't think too highly of Sioux Falls.
I love this attitude. I have competitors who think like this, and we regularly outperform their cosmopolitan asses from the isolated, small, midwest bubble. It has to be pretty humiliating for them. But at least they have cheap flights... which is nice, I'm sure.
I have a client in San Francisco who would laugh and laugh at someone thinking KC is cosmopolitan. A client in St Louis would do the same. I'll just keep enjoying life in my bubble, dreaming of how great it would be to live somewhere I could smugly judge others based on the presence of a country music concert.
So much better here with intellectuals, isn't it boys?

What, pray tell, is Sioux Falls then? I mean besides a place to get gas on the way to Omaha.
If you can get past the smell and the decade or more of I29 construction, I guess Sioux City has something. What? Not sure. Look, WOW is nuts, Sioux Falls is not this metropolitan area on the verge of pulling in the first four but it isn't Sioux City either. Sioux City is a dump. It always has been, it always will be. Even though they are in different states, the distance is relevant to Fargo (nice, growing, town) and Grand Forks (hell on earth). Sioux Falls (nice, growing, town) and Sioux City (hell on earth).
Oh, does anyone think Dayton just felt the arena needed an upgrade?
