I spoke to a coach on the UW-Oshkosh staff and he said that Tyler is going to be playing there this fall. NDSU apparently cooled on him a little bit and the kid just wants to play football, so he decided to play closer to home.

Gone from the roster as I posted prior to this thread. This leaves us pretty thin at DE, not too many proven guys ready to go. Boyer is one of the few.

But I do find it odd that if NDSU cooled on him why didn't he head to SIU like he was looking at before rather than UW-O??? Must be some character issues or something if this is all true

His Dad played at Oshkosh?

It's a pretty big jump downward from Madison to Oshkosh. This is may be more trouble than it's worth.

He was on campus working out with the team. I don't know if we cooled on him or he just didn't feel comfortable here and left.

Well that sucks but when was the last time We had a transfer that actually worked out for us?

So....before the Westphal bashing starts, let me ask the question...

Is there something wrong with "us"? The culture....the leadership...etc.?

I know where you are coming from, but before we start taking potshots at everyone/everything, let's find out what happened..

Interesting. I asked a few players and coaches in recent interviews about Westphal and they all seemed complimentary --- but now that I think of it, they sort of gingerly stepped around his being here, i.e., not sure how good he is, haven't seen him against live competition, etc. Not bashing him, just sort of avoiding the question.

Either way, a lot of head scratching going on here for BisonNation. Interesting to see what else comes out on this.

All the players and coaches I visited with about Westphal tried to avoid the topic entirely. Never once did I get the answer I "wanted or expected." I honestly thought someone would gush over the kid. Never did I get that at all. Almost to the point I thought it was weird, but then I simply thought they were taking the old "He has to earn it here first" approach.

He is probably plenty good to play here, but I can guarantee you that Bohl doesn't offer up starting jobs to anyone. We could have had a couple transfer QB's if he would have said....SURE COME ON IN and take the top spot on the depth chart. For that I am thankful. We didn't have this kid a month ago, and I we don't have him now. The kid simply wants to play, and I guess you can't fault him for that. Lets see who will step up this year at DE.

I think we might be at the point where Bohl is going to show up at some freshman English classes or intro to calc sand start handing out scholarships to kids who remotely look athletic.

How well was he welcomed by his new teammates. Did the coaching staff cool on him after watching him work out?

Could you please expand on "bingo"? You and your alter ego BisonNeil love to bash on Bohl and company and much is deserved but if you're going to advance this line of thinking, please enlighten us with more than a one word answer. I mean this kid was in town for three weeks, you can't tell me things are that bad. Don't you think Westplal checked things out with his WI friends before he decided to head up to Fargo?

Or was the writing on the wall that he wasn't good enough to start or get a ton of reps so why not transfer somewhere else where he can get those??

Maybe we should be asking the question "why did he transfer from WI?" Thats the problem with transfers who want to play right away. This isn't high school football where you just show up and because you're the biggest, fastest kid you are a star.

Time for Jirk, Jueckem, Drevlow, Perry, etc to step up.

There may be 10 reasons why he left.

Although it is dissapointing that he has decided that NDSU is not a good fit, there may be something else that is fueling this other than a woman in Oshkosh. We have 1. Gratzek, 2. Phillips, 3. Boyer, 4. Stockzynski and 5. Hagen. Maybe these guys surprised Westphall a bit

There may be five other reasons why he left.

6-10. Maybe some of the freshman pheonoms that we have on the defensive line were better that Westphall expected them to be. (6. Drevlow, 7. Juckem, 8. Perry, 9. Gimmestad, 10.Jirik)

This has been stated before and I agree. If he was so good why did he feel the need to transfer from Wisconsin? It was close to home and every kid in Wisconsin wants to go there. There may be reasons that we will never know but not being welcomed by the other players seems a little far fetched to me. Besides, this isn't kindergarten where everyone sits around in a circle and sings sappy songs. It is a competetive college atmosphere of put up or go home. I guess he decided to go home.

He's gone. Who cares? Those that stay will be champions.

Quoting myself (I like it....!!). I only raised this, as we, on this board, typically go crazy about anyone who leaves, and/or selects another school. I have no idea why he left; however, our recent history has to at least raise a little concern.

My best guess is that he probably felt like it wasn't a good fit after being here, and it may have been a combination of being homesick....new girlfriend in Oshkosh....feeling like he wasn't going to get playing time...not connecting with teammates, etc...

I confirmed Westphal to Oshkosh is 100% true. I did not pursue trying to find out why. Oh well, I guess we will never know why he left or what kind of player he could have been for the Bison. Lets close this thread and move on.

I heard he was disappointed with NDSU's tv coverage this fall.

Why hello there. I'm looking for a Mr. Lakesbison. Have you seen him?

I just received a text from Westphal and he informed me that he found out we were moving to the WAC and he knew he just couldn't compete at that level.
