Bison Fan Frisco Flight Fiasco - The Plane Truth
My sister finally returned from Frisco on Wednesday. Her blog posting demonstrates the plight many Bison fans experienced on their return flight to North Dakota.

How many other fans faced the same airline travel challenges?

Friend of mine didn't get out of Dallas until yesterday. I lucked out and was only delayed a few hours.

One of my brothers finally got home Thursday on AA. He was supposed to be on Frontier on Monday.

That's why I hate flying and I don't if I can help it. I've had more than a few experiences like that myself.

Agreed, however I will say if you don't have status and don't know the tricks to deal with crap like this, I can understand folks frustration and not wanting to fly.
For those who do not read it, check out my travel hacking thread. I have touched on tricks for dealing with these situations on there in the past and I will give my #1 tip here again:
When things go south in a hurry, NEVER wait to have someone at a desk rebook you if a very long line. Get on the phone with the airline and if the wait there is also horrendous, if at a large airport, spring for a one day pass at the airline's lounge and get your help there. That $25-50 will be the best money you spend that day.

Re: Bison Fan Frisco Flight Fiasco - The Plane Truth
^^^THIS ^^^ GET ON THE PHONE!!! I have rebooked my connecting flight from the tarmac during flight delays.
We fly frequently and THIS is the best advice I could also give. Read TSCF's hacking tips, he knows!

Re: Bison Fan Frisco Flight Fiasco - The Plane Truth
My wife is the one who wrote the blog and the advice of getting on the phone is great in normal circumstances...but talk to others and four, six and more hours are what people were on hold for because they were canceling flights left and right. When we travel to the game next year (we are that confident in our Bison!), we will read your tips and take note. I got on the plane and had no problems Sunday; her experience was vastly different and she was traveling with a minor which made things more difficult.

Ride with us, as we will be going down from Rugby..WHEN the Bison make yet another trip south, seriously..I love driving, even if the drive home had a lot of bad roads especially from Grand Forks to Rugby, but wife and I have had way to many bad experiences flying the last few years...so driving it is!!! A lil side-trip to Carrington is no biggie...lol!

Note the airline lounge trick......
By the way, I don't view the phone versus club thing as an OR either. When I run into problems, I immediately get on the phone and start walking to the club. I basically take help from the first person who ends up giving it to me and keep from putting all my eggs in one basket.

Re: Bison Fan Frisco Flight Fiasco - The Plane Truth
That story would have been me as well! Luckily I still had a friend that drove back on Monday morning, so after my flight for Monday morning was canceled and I couldn't get through to delta or my flight insurance company I decided to ride with him back to Bismarck. Not Ideal but I made it back by Tuesday afternoon.
To top it off, when I got back Tuesday I received notifications from Delta that my flights were canceled yet again.

Foolish woman. Clearly deserved what she got.
Thinks Frozen is great movie. Gets chance to live it. Complains.

Re: Bison Fan Frisco Flight Fiasco - The Plane Truth
We left Dallas at 7:00 AM Sunday with Delta, landed early in MSP, left MSP and landed early in Fargo. My wife is Delta Platinum status - and I bet many "paying customers" took a back seat to anyone that has that status, so if a plane was full like ours were, they wouldn't get a seat.
Now... My wife left for work to the east coast monday afternoon and ended up sleeping in the Detroit airport because of cancelled flights and commented that if she didn't have her status with Delta, she would have been stuck for days.
As for driving - the first year we left Fargo at 6:30 AM and arrived at our hotel at 9:45 PM in Lewisville - very quick trip with fast driver and perfect roads.
The same group with slightly slower driver and bad roads took many hours longer this year -
A bad day driving or flying to Frisco to watch NDSU win another National Championship is much better than a good day at work!

Re: Bison Fan Frisco Flight Fiasco - The Plane Truth
She is a excellent writer, the topic not a pleasant one. Why is traveling with a minor any different than just two adults. It is two seats, why a difference? I could relate to her experiences, although not for that duration.

One other stellar trick is to direct Twitter @deltaassist. Key is to follow them and ask them to follow you. This is third great trick..... see delta points blog for details.

It can be $$$$$$ to get a car back to Fargo one way. I paid $80 for about 4 hours of usage one year because we left on American and ended up going some place else on Southwest and rather than fly back to Dallas to fly American we just went to the cities. $80 isn't that big of a deal, but people were saying they were WAY more.

Or you can sit around in an airport for 2-4 days and keep getting rear ended. So wheres the trade off?

Cheapest I found was ~$600 from DFW to Fargo for a one way rental car.

We did. On the way down my dad and I had to switch airlines due to a 3-hour delay getting into Denver from Dickinson and then our luggage was lost. My brother had his flight out of Fargo cancelled and he had to drive to Minneapolis and switch airlines. My uncle's family had flight cancelled out of Bismarck and had to drive the whole way there and back. On the way back, my dad and I got stuck in Denver on Sunday and were told we couldn't get a plane until Wednesday after standing in customer service line for 3.5 hours. Airlines wouldn't comp a hotel, taxi, rental car, or anything else. Ended up renting a car on our own dime and driving the 10.5 hours home.

Re: Bison Fan Frisco Flight Fiasco - The Plane Truth
After reading some of the nightmares on this thread I feel kind of lucky Got bumped or didn't have a seat on Sunday morning from Dallas to Minneapolis. Had to stay overnight in Dallas. Airline gave me a voucher for hotel room and shuttle from airport to hotel and back Monday morning. Also wrote me a check at Dallas airport for $1,300. Finally got home Monday night to Bismarck at 6:30 just in time for the football game.

Re: Bison Fan Frisco Flight Fiasco - The Plane Truth
Friends of mine were supposed to fly out of MSP on Thursday, got bumped to Friday, and then ended up stuck in Memphis. They had to rent a car there to get to Frsco, and arrived in Frisco about 11pm Friday night.

Thinking that next time I will go by mule train? Just leave a week early. I hate airplanes, airports and airlines.

We flew the "other" airline in western ND and they told us to go jump in the lake when we asked for a hotel voucher. Needless to say I will fly Delta next time.

You indeed, were lucky. How did you fly out of Dallas on Monday when all flights were canceled to msp due to the cold? Which airline?

Did Delta from Dallas to MSP and had a long layover in MSP as the plane was there but were waiting for the crew who was coming from Cincy.

It's the wind-up and the pitch, looks like a strike right down the middle of the plate, here's the swing...BAM... a long ball ... deep to the outfield! The park ain't gonna hold it. I could start by calling in a pizza delivery order, to Frisco. That ought to get quite a few of them? Or,...season tickets?

Re: Bison Fan Frisco Flight Fiasco - The Plane Truth
So 24 hours in a bus wasn't so bad. At least we had booze, snacks, and movies
