St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
Interesting development out of the NSIC...

Big news brewing in the NSIC: multiple sources have indicated to myself & @ElsenMidcoSN that St. Cloud State is dropping football. A text message from head coach Scott Underwood confirmed a 3 PM meeting with administration, but no other details were provided to him. #NSICFB

This really sucks for these programs. Was this mostly expected or shocking?

St cloud state to the Summit! You heard it here first!

Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
Always hate to see former NCC schools lose a program. It was tough watching _ND lose football. Wait......
-
Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
St. Cloud State almost dropped football in 2010 and dropped 6 other sports in 2016.

Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
There's no doubt that hockey is their (SCSU) only marquee sport, but I rarely see that rink sold out for a game, no matter the opponent.

Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
I wonder if Mankato will see this as a positive or negative development. On the one hand, it solidifies their already dominant position in NSIC football. On the other hand, they may want out for better competition. Pioneer League and then Summit in all other sports would suit them well. That is, if the leadership there had any vision whatsoever, which they don't.

Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
Those chickensh*ts at SCumSU are adding men's soccer to their fall sports lineup with these moves. So let me get this straight, to satisfy Title 9 requirements you cut men's football and the golf programs, then start a men's soccer program? Translation: football costs too much money and fundraising is hard so we give up.

Minnesota Duluth has been a solid D2 programs for many years as well. So it will be interesting if less competition for D2 players in the region translates to more success.

Or you know... Reality.

Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
A quote from St. Cloud State President Robbyn Wacker in this article: https://www.sctimes.com/story/news/2...ix/2634708001/
Quote:
Plus, support for football has waned, Wacker said. There were 58 football season ticket holders this fall. In the last three years, the average Huskies football game drew between 1,000 and 1,300 spectators, Weems said.
Doesn't look like the sport will be missed by many.

It's like last summer when I gave my neighbor an extra hosta plant that we had and when she killed it thought there was something wrong with the plant we gave her (like it was my fault). No, it's not my fault it died, you need to water the dang plant for it to live.

Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
At least MSUM will be able to schedule a game with Concordia again.

Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football

I will take it one more step...There are virtually no Men's DII Soccer programs in this part of the world. They will have to travel and play as an independent. Guess what regional DI league could desperately use another Soccer member to keep it's autobid? Guess what regional DI league doesn't have Fooball? Douple has already been on record that there were other regional schools that were interested in moving up behind the scene. If your Douple, doubling down on MN and grabbing SCSU and UST makes sense for the Summit. Again, there will be those on here that cheer for another regional rivalry like we got with UMKC and UST. SCSU to the Summit would be the last straw for me, what a joke and it IS going to happen. Somebody check on Lakes.
Don't throw any BS my way about how they are broke, indifferent and can't afford it. Omaha claimed to be in massive financial trouble as well in the months leading up to their move. SCSU is following the same playbook. They will sell it that there is more revenue at D1 and that without the albatross of football, they can do it. I will put my tin foil hat back on now...tell me I'm wrong though.

Smart move for a hawky school.

Is the admin concentrating on academics?
If so good for them... would seem odd at that school

Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
Might have to go take a look at St. Cloud’s roster,
see if there are any potential recruits (pwo). Already looked
at NSIC All-Conference team to see if there were any
FR or Soph there from St Cloud, but did not see any.
Crookston was something like 0-11, so maybe the Dragons
could find a player or 2 there.
When Omaha shut down football, the Bison were able to get transfer DB Bryan Shepherd. IIRC there was a need for depth there at the time. Right now, off the top of my head, can’t think of any depth concerns at any particular position (WR?).

Can they play right away? Sophomore LB from St. Cloud, 2nd team all-conference Devon Krzanowski - he is from Fon Du Lac, WI. Special teams depth?

I would guess the NCAA would give waivers to play immediately in the case of a football program being dropped.
-
Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
Quick check of SC State's
roster and results.....
Junior kicker Adam Stage is from the powerhouse Kimberly, HS (Appleton, WI) program.....
But he is a paltry 11-19 in FG attempts and only 8-16 from beyond 30 yards.....
Oh well.

Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
St Johns is better than both of these teams. move along, not 1 will come to NDSU (although Pheonix Sproles is pimping his HS CB from crookstons team on twitter)

No need for a tin foil hat. I think you are spot on.

They always let the players be immediately eligible when a program shuts down. Don't see why it would be any different this time.

There's no doubt the Summit has a lot of problems, but beggars can't be choosers and a mediocre conference is better than no conference. I don't have a lot of hope in the future of the Illinois schools due to complete lack of money. Very real risk we drop below the required number of teams/sports. Douple is doing what a commissioner is supposed to do and look out for the long term prospects of his conference. I don't think any of the mid-major conferences don't have some warts. Yes, I'd love to be in an all sports conference with the 4 Dakotas, 2 Montanas, Illinois St, UNI, but that's a pipe dream. So is FBS. Anybody can be successful when you're given everything, that doesn't fit the Bison.

Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
Tom Miller's article in the GF Herald stated that the enrollment at St Cloud State has fallen from over 18,000 to now less than 12,000 in this decade.

No wonder they need to drop some sports. That’s a ton of money no longer available

NDSU(and UND to a lesser extent) really hurt SCSU. Much of NDSU's growth spurt came from marketing to MN kids; kids that would have otherwise gone to places like SCSU. Some MN schools have pushed back with better marketing campaigns of their own(which is part of the reason NDSU's growth has stalled); SCSU not so much.
-
Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
So speaking of that, the number that is always kicked around that NDSU needs to hit in order to fill up campus is 15,000 students. Is that still the case with the new dorms online?
-
Re: St Cloud St and Crookston drop football
One side effect is with this many programs in our neck of the woods dropping football, that's a ton of athletes who may not have the opportunity to play college football. Will certainly bolster the quality of college football in the region and create more competition and quality walk on players for the rest of the NSIC, NSIC, and MVFC
