Thoughts On The 2024 Season
Anyone have a basic 2deep?
Anyone even know which seniors still have eligibility and are returning?
Who has an inkling of what positions the coaches may be looking to bring in transfers?
Which RB's will get the snaps in 2024?
Will the Bison be a full on two QB team in 2024?
Who returns to the OL, and are their starting positions really locked in?
Who is the new punt returner in 24, and KR ?'s as well?
What to expect from the new DC's?
-
Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
At the moment, all I want is a 2 rb system with a 3rd sprinkled in. Not a rb by committee situation anymore.
-
Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
Hard to speculate too deeply until we know who's on the roster.
As said in other threads though, the way we finished the season has me optimistic & excited!

Agreed. And not a big fan of the 2 QB system either.

Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
Should have a lot of guys back. Depth will hurt a lot by the portal in the coming years. Where is the stud upcoming OLineman that can fill in? We always have one, but this year I dont see one. TK Marshall/Kpeenu/Watson at RB. Maybe Brown. It should be another RB by committee as that's what we did when TP was OC. We dont seem to have that big bruiser back with TWill gone. If we can get every expected WR back and Hegerle/Collins can step up, we will be absolutely loaded at WR. Imagine if Hegerle/Collins live up to the hype. It sometimes takes a couple years to get going at WR.
Defense not too concerned in the front 7. The secondary I am concerned. We need a transfer to two. Need to get better in coverage. Nelson/Alexander at CB? Maybe move Shepperd to Safety? Maybe best as a 3rd corner. Cole Wiz., has been awesome at SS. Need an upgrade at the other safety spot.

Isn't like half the new class lineman? You got the 9 man player of the year and a defending state champion wrestler coming to play line????
-
Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
There's currently 2 north dakota 9 man kids starting on nfl lines eh.

I believe in our upcoming class but you still have to prove it on the field. Right now we dont have that. It may take them a couple years to produce.

I haven't been this excited about an upcoming Bison season since the 2020 season where we would have taken a talent heavy team out to Oregon.

Ain't that the truth!!

Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
SDSU will make the playoffs but loose their second playoff game.
UN_ will miss the playoffs completely.
Bison loose 2 games but win the one that matters in Frisco.
By your tix in August again my friends.

Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
I thought the Bison had both starting safeties returning; and Ryan Jones is a junior next year.
At RB, I thought Owen Johnson looked great before his injury, and he may be the fastest RB on the roster.
I still like Chris Harris as a dark horse to get significant snaps at WR. His HS stuff was replete with him killing it blocking.

Wiz will be back unless the portal gets him. Jung was not introduced on Sr Day, so I"m guessing he'll be back. Thought I heard good things in Fall camp about Frosh Noah Taylor at safety.

I missed Cole Wiz potentially coming back at Safety. Solid there. Need an upgrade at the other safety spot.

An upgrade at safety and LB is where I'm hoping Polasek opens up competition and plays the best players, regardless of seniority. At least I hope we have better options at those positions in our underclassmen. If we don't have better options, it could be another rough year for our defense.

…corner, too. The Whiz should have one of the Safety positions locked up…

Ya, I agree on Noah Taylor. Could be a great one.

Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
I'm excited to see some of the uber talented young players progress. Guys like Toby Anene, McCaslin, Najee Nelson, CharMar Brown, Darius Givance, Jailen Duffie, Jaiden Pickett, Crumby, etc
We got some guys who were going to play significant roles like Enock Sibomana and Hunter Zenzen
Lots of new guys who showed promise like Marcus Gulley
and Jaquise Alexander. Hendricks turned into a stud DE
Those are just a few of many.

Agreed on the young players, will be good to see them on field next year.
We need a LB to step up like Hankey transformed himself his final two years from a slow player always seeming to be a step behind to a guy everywhere and in the right spot on the field.
Hendricks still has a year of eligibilty?! I thought we really missed him in that Montana game. Awesome if he is back and healthy. He was a problem for opposing O Lines.
-
Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
I'm sure he's a great kid, but Jung looks like he should be playing at MSU across the river.
Also, more Gulley.....

Yeah there was a lot of praise for Jung but I really didn’t see it and quite frankly I don’t believe I want to see anymore of him. An upgrade would be nice.

I'm sure Jung is a great fella but I think his career for the Bison should have consisted of Special Teams and as a depth guy. No offense meant to the guy as I'm sure he's given it his all and I respect that.

Jung is a great leader, smart and a future coach... but a marginal talent. He was clearly starting because of his system knowledge while the young guys like Darrius Givance and Noah Taylor learn. I hope Givance has a great off seasson because the faster he gets on the field, the better our defense is
-
Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
Also I think our latest recruiting class is awesome and is full of tall developmental guys. But many will need a year or 2 with Kramer, so we will need some transfer portal guys.
-
Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
Can anyone bring some clarity to the whole, "Jung must be replaced as starter," stuff?
What did he do wrong? What didn't he do, that he should have?
I recall a couple of plays in the middle of the season where he appeared to have been the problem, but that's about it.
2nd on the team in solo tackles, 3rd in total tackles, 2nd in interceptions. If Wisniewski wasn't all world, he would look even better.
Jung will be hard for anyone to beat out for the job, but ya, if Noah or someone else can standout that much and win the job, that would be great. Remember, this is free safety, the guy needs to have decent raw speed.

Might just be anecdotal because I don't watch it that closely on every play but it seemed like teams threw it in his direction a lot more than at the other DBs. I'm guessing that wasn't coincidental.

Definitely seemed opposing teams game planned off his lack of speed in coverage.

Lack of speed, poor positioning and inability to wrap up. He's probably a great kid and a good teammate but he's not good enough for a D1 DB.

Just overall lack of athletic ability IMO.

Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
Defensive line was the biggest problem this year especially in the 3 losses. That needs to be fixed before anything else!!! No solution there an they will lose 3 or 4 games again.

Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
Well to be fair the D Line played very well in the playoffs. I think in discussions on possibly another thread that they (DL) was finally able to play free and it was speculated the Patrino was holding them back.

Yes, it definitely sounded like they were being asked to do too much and there were too many “more involved” strategies and concepts. Once they went back to basic the line played well.

They looked completely different late in the year. We still need a bonefide stud, but I expect out d-line to be a strength next year.
At DE, we lose Kava but my gut says Hunter Zenzen will step up. Hendricks was looking like that stud. I hope we can get him back. McCaslin has the 6-5 frame to be dominant but he would benefit by adding 15 pounds to get up to 250. Toby Anene is physically ready, it's all about technique and practice. Then you got Roques and Menz who will be a senior and Junior, when you expect them to take the next step. Abraham Myers and Victor Isele are probably a year away. Gannon Williams looks like he could compete. True freshman rarely play but we may have 1
At DT, we got the Moestart brothers (for sure Will). Kody Huisman is due for a breakout season. Logan Larson showed flashed. Duttenheffer will be a junior but hasn't been dominent yet but should play his best ball as a Jr.. Seems like we got more 3 techs than big pluggers. Brennan Palmer and Josh Magin are young and have huge frames, but are probably a year away. Keenan Wilson is an intetesting prospect. I don't think Entz even recruited a DT this year. We absolutely need a DT for the 2nd signing period or a transfer. Probably 2. Simple math for next year and what we got on the roster
-
Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
I’m glad entz is gone. Excited to see how next year plays out.
-
Re: Thoughts On The 2024 Season
Adding to HerdBot’s post above, the DT Coach Entz & Co had recruited was:
Kian Payne - St. Thomas Aquinas (Overland Park, KS) 6-4 / 255
Great highlight package, looked like he could do it all.
But, with Payne being a Kansas kid, and KState being short on DL recruits at the time, he accepted their PWO offer and decommited from NDSU.
In my totally amateur non-coach opinion, I would argue he would be better off with a team that runs a 4 man DLine. And KState doesn’t……
Hopefully the coaches find another DT for the recruiting class.
