NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
The 2023 North Dakota Legislature appropriated $59 million for this major construction project. The NDSU Foundation is raising up to $30 million additional dollars to match the state's money.
Last October, two major donations were announced for the project. Doosan Bobcat pledged $5 million, and Mortenson Construction pledged $5 million. It was also announced at that time that the total amount raised was $14.5 million.
This Friday at 11am, another announcement is scheduled by the NDSU Foundation. At that time another major gift will be announced that will also include the naming of the complex after that donor. The event will be live streamed on their website.
The project will consist of major additions and connections in and around the existing engineering complex. The round building in the center will be demolished and replaced with a new building. Other additions are on the west and north sides. Hopefully this gift announcement will get construcion underway.

By “their website” can we assume that you mean that of the Foundation?

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
I am thrilled in anticipation of this announcement. We have such a great engineering dept. Round building has to go and more efficient buildings up.
-
Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
It's probably the right decision but that round building is an iconic reminder of the university to me. As I was becoming aware of the school that was always on the brochures and catalogs. As an architecture student it was an integral part of where I spent a lot of time. We didn't have a clock tower. We had a round engineering building.

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
Well, maybe throwing you a bone but have them take a massive picture of the "round building" and have it in the new building. I will admit, the "round building" is a landmark and has a 60's vibe and I would imagine when a student is asking directions, someone could say "turn left at the round building." Now that will be gone.

They might end up walking in circles for hours.

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
I was never in the "round building". NDSU would have flown to the moon before they would have admitted me to the vaunted Engineering program. BUT the rooms must have been like a slice of a pie or oddly shaped? Maybe I should go in there next time I go out to campus.

There are no classrooms there. It was all offices.

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
I was in there a few years ago....it needed to go. That whole area really needed some investment so it's good to see it's finally happening.

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
Back in my day, I think they had two computer terminals sitting under a stairway. So if you were like me and went to class and then to work and got back to campus after midnight that was one of the last resorts for finding a open terminal to do homework on (if the place wasn't locked up.)

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
Dolve Hall is an architectural treasure and must be preserved at all costs!!!

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
I don't know if there are any older architecture graduates here (I am most certainly not a graduate at all) but I have a ton of architecture friends from my days as a volunteer historic preservationist. Anyway, they had class or drawing stuff or whatever in those QUONSET huts. I kid you not. It would be freezing in winter, hot in summer, putting on sweaters, pulling off, etc. But dang, the architects I knew turned out fabulous. The Renaissance Hall Arch Dept as well as Klai Landscape are so beautiful. Night and day. Call me crazy but did they keep one of those Quonset huts as a keepsake reminder or something? ;)

I had 3rd year studio in that quonset hut. It was a joy. Early 90s.

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
I'm told that I lived in one of those quonsets back in the mid fifties. They were married student housing back then. I wasn't married at the time but I was related to a student who was.

They were around in the 70s as well.

And apparently on good authority, the "mid-50s" as well.

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
Glad to hear NDSU raised the funds to get the State grant (25% NDSU / 75% State).
It was getting late to hit the number to get the State dollars.
The UFO* has got to go, and many labs need updates (if not for facilities, for safety).
And this will force Xcel to update their infrastructure so they don't have another on-campus transformer leak (and the ensuing remediation).
*The circular building was introduced to me as "the UFO" ... partly because of its shape, partly as an abbreviation for "ugly freakin' officebuilding".

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
Bumping this up for the announcement.

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
Richard Offerdahl - Class of 1965 - $25 million gift!

They were in use in '93, when I got here. I remember that getting rid of them was one of Chapman's priorities....didn't one of them get moved over to the west side of the campus and used for surplus or something?

Pretty spectacular. I wish I was a serial failure at retirement like he is.

I know one was close to the area where the Football Complex was, but it was a while ago. As a former historic preservationist, I think we need to keep reminders of our past. Cannot just tear things down indiscriminately. The "round" building, yea, it can go. Just think if a decision was made to tear down the former Northern School Supply Building but Doug Burgum came along and made it into Renaissance Hall. Same with Lincoln Mutual and John Klai came along to make it Landscape Arch. And the old Pioneer Mutual with its crazy red blinking sign - and it was made into Barry Hall.
The Quonsets have an incredible history, maybe a War relic, Architectural studios and egads! ....An early-day home to Greenfield Bison.

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
And the donation:biggrin: is big-time breaking news on the Fargo Forum!
-
Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
Construction will start this summer.

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
I hope they build this one in a non-disposable fashion. It’s a shame we don’t do that more in this country. My last visit to Tuscany found me in the new wing of a rural villa. My room was 600 years old. (And due for some paint)
-
Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
Look at all the beautiful historic buildings on campus that have stood the test of time - Putnam Hall (that domed little building by the library), Ceres Hall, OLD MAIN, Justin Morrill, South Engineering, and Minard (well, part of it had a scary moment). Those have always been my favorite buildings. And the campus gates which were destroyed somewhat during the 1957 tornado and Chapman had them reopened/reconstructed in a symbolic gesture. It is not feasible to keep every single building forever, but dang, the "disposable" society we are in drives me nuts.

Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
Here is the story. Will break ground in the spring
https://www.inforum.com/news/fargo/a...eering-complex
Sugihara Hall a few years ago
The Peltier Complex should open this spring
We've knocked out quite a few projects over the last 5 years. What's the next one?
-
Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
All the disciplines that are going into Peltier, I assume? Sheppard Arena, Harris Bldg and so forth? What will happen to those buildings? I assume torn down? And if torn down, what will go in their places?
-
Re: NDSU Center for Engineering and Computational Sciences
The 2023 Legislature also appropriated $97M for a Waldron Hall replacement.

Do you know off-hand if the $97M will take care of the entire project? Thank you.

I kind of think that he'd have gotten wealthy no matter where he went to school. It's so freaking refreshing to see that kind of humility.

So all the classroom spaces remain in all it's rugged beauty and it's all new office space

The skywalks are both new correct? That will be a nice addition from the Memorial Union to the residence halls.

I walked from T lot for years and I didn't need no stinking skywalks.
