Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
This is going to be a wide open field. While I am still cheering for NDSU to win, it will be a dog fight to get out of the tourney alive. I love the bracket we are in. Lets take care of business and go dancing again. Give Dex another shot at Gonzaga. Go Bison Horns Up!!

Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
Hope the Bison don't get a 16 seed (rematch with Gonzaga).

We SHOULDN'T get a 16 seed, probably a 15, maybe a 14...... IF we win the the tourney.
Though a rematch would be neat to see and compare to the benchmark set in Seattle.
One step at a time, win the next game.

Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
Win the Summit tourney and be like Middle Tenn St last year!

Gonzaga may not be on the #1 line anymore. If Kansas, Nova, UCLA, and UNC all win their conference tournaments those are your 1 seeds. Which means NDSU, in all likelihood a 15 if they win the SL Tourney, could be matched up with the Zags in a 2/15 matchup once again.
As for the tourney itself I think USD, NDSU, Omaha, SDSU, and IPFW all have "decent" shots to win it but there's definitely no clear favorite. I'm predicting USD/SDSU in one semi and IPFW/NDSU in the other and it's a total coin flip from there on out.
-
Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
Right now they have USD #15 vs #2 Baylor in the South region.
-
Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
The team to beat is USD. I still like our chances though. Bison are playing OK but not great right now. We can fix this. I hope AJ regains some confidence in his jump shot by tourney time.

Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
Dave Richman is the only coach in the league with a Summit Tourney title as a head coach. That won't change next week.
-
Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
I am a little concerned about AJ stepping up, he hasn't really proven to be able to do so in big games has he? He doesn't have to take over games just be solid. In years past he has seemed to shrink away in the spotlight.

USD hasnt really been in this position. Pressure on them. Meanwhile, we have.

Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
If we can rediscover how to play defense and not go through these 6 minute stretches without scoring, I like our chances. If not, I don't.

People hoping AJ steps up in offensive productivity is going to be sorely disappointed. He just never transformed into that kind of player. He can still be productive and play good defense and get rebounds, but let's not get get caught up in the trap of him blowing up on offense again. He isn;t going to, and the team can still win with him doing other things. We have scorers on the team that have been there all year.

Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
Need a repeat of the first WIU game 3 times this weekend. Bison need to shoot it well and defend well.
On a side note which team does everyone think has the best shot at actually winning a game in the NCAA? Or is the Summit rep just a sacrificial lamb again? Any good looking match ups that could happen?

If a 16 seed- zero chance. 15 seed-dont hold your breath, 14 seed- 5%. Middle Tenn St did beat a Michigan St team that was one of the top 3 favorites to win it all in the 1st round last year. The Summit winner would need to get a team like Baylor, Arizona, Florida St, or Florida who have shown to disappear during games for long periods of time. Don't get me wrong, all of these teams would still be a double digit favorite, but all you need is a chance.

USD is the best team in the league but I'm not sure they shoot the 3 well enough to upset anyone in the big dance. At best any SL team is going to be a 15 seed. I just don't see anyone in our league beating a 2 seed.

Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
The league really needs to schedule better OOC games. Win some of those games and the RPI rises and chances of being a 12 seed or maybe an 11 become more possible. Lets win 3 in SF and take our chances in the dance.
-
Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
FWIW, Lunardi's latest bracket has the Yotes as a 15 seed playing Baylor. I believe NDSU was a 15 seed in his prior bracket. Other 15 seeds are Oakland, Bakersfield, & Florida Gulf Coast. 14 seeds are Winthrop, Belmont, Akron & Bucknell. Would likely take a couple of the 14 seeds getting upset in their conference tournaments for the Yotes (or NDSU) to move up to a 14 seed. If anyone else wins the SLT, they will likely end up as a 16 seed.

AJ has had ups and downs all season this year. He'll have 3-4 good games offensively then go dry for 2-3 games. He's had a few rough ones lately (ORU - 3 for 16). I am hoping he'll be on the upswing for the tourney.

I get that but there have been times in the past in big games were it simply looks like he is scared to be in the game. Let's hope being a bit older will help that.

I think he's still a very good player for us even if he isn't scoring. He does alot of little things really well. I think for myself anything in double digits from him is definitely a bonus help on the team.

Exactly the wrong way to view any matchup. Bison vs. opponent. We need balanced scoring, team defense and everyone to rebound.

Really I think most low seed upsets are by a 3 PT shooting team that gets hot. Really hard to beat a top 2 team inside with the usual difference in talent down low compared to usual play in a mid major league from a high seed.

Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
AJ is a big key to the tourney run. He does not have to be great but he needs to be efficient. Knock down a couple 3's, nail a couple driving layups, and sink some FT's and the Bison will be in good shape as long as Paul and Dex have good games offensively. If the great AJ shows up watch out. What AJ can't do is play like he did last Saturday in Omaha where he accomplished nothing on either end of the floor. I have never seen such a piss poor performance on both ends of the floor. His usually solid defense and rebounding was nowhere to be found and he was totally lost.
With that said I like the Bison's chances in the SLT. Their experience and past tourney runs should serve them well and having that extra day between the Quarter and the Semi's will be huge. Perfect time for the Bison to put together some games where everyone is clicking as they have not had one of those games this year yet. No better time than the SLT and the Big Dance to do just that.

This is the confidence I like to see heading into the tourney. So much better than all the negativity on the Omaha thread. A Richman coached team tends to show up and play well in Sioux Falls, I mean 2 years ago nobody expected us to do much and LA led us to the dance. Last year nobody gave us much of a shot and we knocked off IPFW (without Paul Miller) and made it to the championship game. We are also likely coming in with a bit of a chip on our shoulder after losing out on the share of the regular season conference title so it's time to earn the one that's more important. Let's get it!

Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
Dupree has stepped up in a lot of big moments throughout his career. Dont be surprised to see him have a good tournament.
-
Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
WEAR GREEN. been there every year always wear green even though newbie jeff culhane said yellow..
sdsu wears yellow.WE ARE ONLY GREEN TEAM.
NDSU wins this tourney easily, paul miller & khy kabellis must takeover the games and let dexter bang the boards
and for gods sake DEFENSE THE 3... let teams get by you and shoot 2's.. who cares

Saw this on twitter...makes me feel good about our chances. Our guys will be motivated and I have a sneaky feeling Big Dex will do everything in his power to will this team to a tourney win in his senior year.

Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
This team really just needs AJ to be a glue type guy. Constantly bring defense, rebounding and efficient scoring. To be more efficient he does need to attack more and get to the line.
With Dex gone, next year is when AJ will really have to step up but for now just be that glue guy like KB was for so many Bison teams.

Looking forward to the Wild Summit tourney. Go Bison Horns Up

Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
if you see the ndsu fans that have been at EVERY SUMMIT TOURNEY... buy them a beer. "ahem...ahem"
Cannot wait for NDSU/USD on Tuesday night, who will the Bunny Turds cheer for?? will they even show up, or will there only be like 4000 people there haha.
We need to DEFEND THE 3, I don't give a crap if we are too aggressive and they go buy us, i'd rather teams shoot 15 footers, then 3 point shots... that's what's killed us this year.
PS- Coach Richman, if you wanna win this tourney START TYSON WARD, PLAY HIM 25 MINUTES, he isn't a freshman anymore.
Khy
Carlin
Paul
Ward
Dexter *Dylan*
that's the best line up we got. Sorry its the truth.
DOES ANYONE HAVE EXTRA ROOMS FOR MONDAY TUESDAY? REP ME IF U DO & LEAVE PHONE #

Re: Conference tourney thoughts- before during and afterward
USD was picked 7th in the Summit League pre-season poll.
Good article on how the Coyotes did it.....
http://m.yankton.net/sports/article_....html?mode=jqm
Quote:
Smith and his staff set out to build the kind of team that could beat some of those elite Summit League programs. They enticed three players from other Division I programs to come to Vermillion to help build a championship contender: Trey Dickerson (Iowa), Matt Mooney (Air Force) and Carlton Hurst (Colorado State). That trio sat out last season as redshirts, and in short order, people began to rave about their potential; about their ability to hit the court together the following season and help turn things around......
......Transfers don’t equal immediate success; it takes you time to develop chemistry and a feel for who works well together.
In time, though, USD got it all figured out. It became clear right away that Dickerson was a true point guard (a distributor, etc.), that Hurst was physical and freakishly athletic (his exploits in the weight room are already legendary), and that Mooney was a high-level scorer. Add to that Burch-Manning and Flack down low, and the Coyotes suddenly had a new-look squad that was versatile, quick and athletic.
You could make a valid argument, however, that it’s been the play of three freshmen off the bench that have made the difference for this time. Triston Simpson, Tyler Peterson and Brandon Armstrong all average double digit minutes, and it’s gotten to the point where there’s no concern throwing them into the fire late in a tight game.....

I hope AJ goes off for 30 one of these games. Party because it means we win in a blowout, partly to see people's reactions around here.

Wouldn't be a shocker because he can go off at times. He is a completely unreliable player, and typically has not been good in big games. I said this year's ago and nothing has changed. I definitely would not start him

I really think this year was a lost opportunity for NDSU. We do still have the Summit tournament. In a year where the conference tops have fallen off, NDSU was on it's way until the second half of the conference season and have gone 4-5 since. Now we have to win a game in the conference tournament just to get to 20 wins. Really hope they can rebound for the conference tournament or there is going to be some major questions going into next year.
